    All users Printer

    Hello, quick question.

Just as you can add shortcuts to programs in the 'All Users' Profile in Windows so that they appear say on the desktop or in the start menu, can you add a Network Printer so that it will show up for anyone who logs on?

We have 3 pc's that r being used for training and will have many different users logging on. I am hoping I wont have to set up the printer every time someone new logs on?

    Cheers <img src=/S/coffeetime.gif border=0 alt=coffeetime width=32 height=48>
    Thanks,

You could map the printer using a login script, see AddWindowsPrinterConnection method for Printer Logon Scripts in Windows 2003 and 2000 for an example.

    Re: All users Printer

Thanks for that - I have already got the script working, but I want it to be specific to these three machines rather than to users ( I dont know which users will be using the machines)

Can this be done using a group policy? Can I set it with a local machine policy or something like that? Perhaps with the log on script... aha!
    Thanks,

I take it that the "aha" signifies that you have answered your own questions?

    Re: All users Printer

Can't you use a Group Policy login script that checks the hostname, or only allows access from the relevant computers?

sounds good, but not sure how i would do that - check for the computers that were being logged onto.

i dont think i have access to group policies but i can ask the next chap up from me (domain admin!)

thanks for your help - sorry to appear dim.

    Re: All users Printer

To find the computer name in a script you can use something like...
    <code>ComputerName = objNetwork.Computername
    if ComputerName = "myPC" then
    Else
    End If</code>

(completely untested, and I don't do VBS scripts, so use at your own risk)...

If you don't want to use Group Policy then why not just put the script into the All Users Startup menu on the relevant PCs?

Just thought. The best place to put this script (or even an .bat file !) would be in the startup folder of the machines!

    Re: All users Printer

I'm still getting up to speed with Windows and Group Policies, but in my previous life in Netwareland I used to test for the MAC address of a PC. I have no idea if this is feasable in the Windows environment or not.
