Re: True Image Update

Bob,
After reading many of the positive comments re. True Image, I purchased and downloaded a copy (8.0 latest build). I plan to image my drive to an external USB 2.0 Maxtor, but I have two questions.

1) Reading the user guide, the section explaining how to create the image and the section on how to restore the image (and in the accompanying screen shots) both refer to the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems. Does this software support NTFS (I hope) ?

2) Can the bootable diskette or CD (that I created upon installing) be tested to see that it will actually work, or will it automatically start restoring the image back to the hard drive?

Re: True Image Update

Since Bob doesn't seem to be online, John, I'll make a couple of comments. Yes, fer sure, TI does do NTFS. Of all my partitions, I only have one that's NTFS but I've backed it up and test-restored it once or twice without problems. I don't suppose that it would make the routine any different if it were the boot partition, which mine isn't.

When you make the CD, you certainly can run it and play around with simulating a restore, stopping short at whatever point you want if you don't want to "complete" the process. I've even used the boot CD to restore some "selected" files just to make sure THAT part of the process works OK. Knowing Murphy's Law, there's always a chance for complications, but I've not had any in my experience with TI so far. Good luck with it.

Edited: I just realized you said you plan to use an external USB drive, so I should qualify my remarks to say that I DON'T have one. My usage has been to hard drives either resident in the machine or on the home LAN.

Re: True Image Update

John,
Big Al beat me to it but his answers were indeed all correct.
Version 8 will handle Fat16/32.NTFS,Ext2/Ext3,Reiser FS3, Linux Swap,XFS and JFS protocols.
I have a mix of Fat32 & NTFS and it handles them both fine & dandy.

You can test the boot disk right up to the point of starting the main program before loading Windows. The initial screen will be the same one as you get if you access TI from within Windows.
It's a good one and a keeper.

Re: True Image Update

Great ! I was getting a bit concerned when I didn't see any reference (except in Appendix A) to NTFS. I'll give TI a test drive tomorrow morning with the external drive. Thanks for the information Al.

Thanks Bob. Your and Al's responses have eased my mind. After reading the hearty endorsements of TI from both of you esteemed and gentlemen, I'm sure I've made the right choice. And besides, I know where to come if I have problems.
