    Tools Menu Items (IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633)

Wow... I just got through 3 days removing all kinds of spyware/malware and other junk from my computer.

Now it runs wonderfully. But I think with all the applications I had to download and use, a couple of items got
placed in my Tools Menu without me knowing where they came from. (or how to get rid of them !!)

When I click on Tools, the following 2 items appear:
    Pop Up Blocker
    Manage AddOns

    See attached print screens.

Does anyone know what these are and why they would suddenly appear on the tools menu?

I guess the BIG question though, is, Can I safely remove them from the tools menu and how?

Thank you for any advice you may offer.

Both are part of the Windows XP SP-2 update - they are not external software, but features added to Internet Explorer by Microsoft. I don't think there is an easy way to remove them, and I don't think it's necessary.

You are better off looking at Help and getting information on how to use these features which were part of SP-2.

HansV - Thank you. The curious thing is, that these were not on the Tools menu prior to all of this !! (Although SP2 has been there for a while!)
JoePerez - I actually have been (suuccessfully) using the Google popup blocker. The Addon Manager seems pretty cool and I will definitely read up on it. After this last battle with spy&mal ware, the more protection, the better !!

Would you know if there is any conflict in using both pop up blockers at the same time? It appears the google one and the IE one are both activated right now.

My main concern was that these 2 items were not 'safe'. (guess I am bit paranoid?)

    Thanks again fellas !

I don't think you want to run both popup blockers at the same time. That should be redundant. There is a chance that running both could cause problems when both activities try to do the same thing at the same time. If you have had good success with the Google blocker and want to keep it do so.

It is so weird that it did not appear originally. <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

In IE go to Tools | Pop-up Blocker | Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.

Tools | Pop-up Blocker | Turn Off Pop-up Blocker only disables it for that session.

Actually, I did see that way out, but I was hoping there was a way to disable it and remove it from the menu altogether.

....there has to a way to remove it safely. I never had it there until 2 days ago!!

If/when I find out how, I will post it back here.

Thank you all again for sharing your knowledge with us !

"Tools | Pop-up Blocker | Turn Off Pop-up Blocker " disables it on ALL of my machines until I turn it back on.

Are you using a "Limited" account on your computer?

There Is NO way of removing it that I have found. Besides some furture updates just may add it back in.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Actually Michael, it HAS been there ever since you applied SP2. It's possible that you haven't noticed it it, but is was there. And as Dave said, you can disable it, but you can't remove it.

I agree with Dave, I do not believe you can remove it. Try going to Internet Options | Privacy. Then uncheck 'Block pop-ups'.
