You gave no links in your post - are you talking about the December acquisition of Giant? What have you seen? Whatever it is, I haven't tried it but maybe someone else has.

    Hi BigAl,

There's a direct download link here: MSFN - Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1.0.501. I've downloaded it but not installed yet. It is BETA - so everyone should be careful.

    Re: Microsoft anti syware

Sorry that there was no link. I tried it and even though I am pretty thorough about scanning with adaware and spybot, it found 2 spyware. It aslo looks nice, and so far has not destroyed anything. It has page for restoring your IE if it is hijacked, but of course the defaults it returns to are all MS pages

I agree with your statement that it is still beta software.

I've just run a scan and it found two problem files -- in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit!
And SearchSquire "Adware" keys in the Registry, as mentioned in the "Comment" on the download webpage.

Doubt it. It the page was hijacked MS would have no way of knowing what it was before. <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> So, selecting their page as a default is not unreasonable. <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19>

    Re: Microsoft anti syware

what I meant was that it does not use your defaults, but automatically assumes MS defaults.

    Re: Microsoft anti syware

I understand that. But if your browser was hijacked that means the defaults were changed. How can MS now the defaults what the defaults were when they've been hijacked?

It might be more reasonable to expect that the 'defaults' in the anti-spyware be able to be changed. Perhaps you might want to post that in the MS newsgorup for the product. It is BETA after all. There will be changes made based on client feedback.

    Re: Microsoft anti syware

There is a setup page when you install the program to store your browser settings that if it is hijacked, the program can restore your settings. I would like if that page would check your settings and put those in, rather than automatically set up MS defaults, and you have to dig around in your computer yourself. This takes place before you are hijacked.
    Thanks

I use the Giant product itself and love it; as I understand it the Microsoft beta omits a few features. I'd wait until there is a production release.

Here's what The Register (or more precisely, what a correspondent from Symantec's "Security Focus") thinks about this new software...

Or even go 1 step further and when installation set restore defaults to current defaults and have some way of updating defaults as you change them.

As I said in the prior post, check out the MS newsgroup for the BETA. Post an opinion/request there. I'm sure that MS personnel will monitor this group.
