    Paper Source (Tray) (2003)

    I want to change the paper source using Print, Properties from inside Word. I do NOT want to use File, Page Setup to change the paper source. I have draft paper in one tray and bond in the other. When a document is finalized, I want to print on bond, but do not want to store the bond paper source in the document. When I choose the Bond paper tray through Print Properties, Word just ignores it and prints from the draft tray.

    Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Paper Source (Tray) (2003)

    Hi & welcome to the Lounge. The settings under File/Page setup.../paper source supercede the settings under Properties; that's why you can't select the bond paper using Properties. You may be able to use two macros that will print using one setting & then the other. So far as I know, changing the Print/Properties settings will change the default for a blank document, but won't override the settings for an existing document.
    Hope this helps,

    Fiddle dee dee! I was wishing so that we didn't continually have to change and then change back through Page Setup. The secretaries hate having to visit Page, setup, then Print, then back to Page setup. A macro may be the answer. I was trying to figure out the differences between Automatically Select and Auto Select and thought maybe that might be the solution. Thanks for your help. <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    Re: Paper Source (Tray) (2003)

    At work, at a user's request, I created a small macro that was linked to a button.
    Effectively it was a "Print this letter with letterhead as the first page" command

    It
    * Set the letterhead (using page setup (first page tray selected))
    * Issued a print
    * Reset the letterhead to plain (page setup again)

    They're very happy with it.

    The downside is that the printer codes for trays are absolutely unique to particular printers - I built the Macro by simply recording the above sequence on the target printer. I later modified it to detect the particular printer involved, and change the tray codes appropriately so that I could apply it universally in my installation. I can post a copy after the weekend if you're interested.

    Attached are macros to print all pages to the same paper tray or print page 1 to a different tray. In the original form they work fine with our HP laser printers. I translated them from Dutch to English, and didn't test them. So maybe you have to adjust a bit, but you'll certainly get the idea. Good luck!

    Thank you, Andrew, I would love to see your macro next week.

    Re: Paper Source (Tray) (2003)

    Best of luck. I found the codes by trial and error by recording macros as I set the trays

    Sub SetLetterHead()
    '
    ' Macro written 11/10/2004 by Andrew Ollivier
    '
    ' Sets appropriate upper tray, prints, then resets

    Dim FirstTrayOn
    Dim OtherTray

    ' Assume that it is one of the Minoltas

    FirstTrayOn = wdPrinterUpperBin
    OtherTray = 508

    ' Correct for the HP8100 Printer

    If InStr(1, ActivePrinter, "HP8100") > 1 Then
    FirstTrayOn = wdPrinterLowerBin
    OtherTray = wdPrinterLargeCapacityBin
    End If

    ' Or the HP 4200 one

    If InStr(1, ActivePrinter, "4200") > 1 Then
    FirstTrayOn = 264
    OtherTray = 263
    End If

    ' OK done - set the page for letterhead

    With ActiveDocument.PageSetup
    .FirstPageTray = FirstTrayOn
    .OtherPagesTray = OtherTray
    End With

    ' Print the current document

    ActiveDocument.PrintOut

    ' and reset the printer to plain

    With ActiveDocument.PageSetup
    .FirstPageTray = OtherTray
    .OtherPagesTray = OtherTray
    End With

    End Sub

    Apart from using the other solutions in this thread, you could have a look at the Print Wizard on MsWizards
