Petrol

What is the best day to fill your car with petrol (gasoline)?

    Re: Petrol

    Excellent Steve.

This caused a discussion in the office yesterday which expanded to if it is a cold day then obviously metal contracts so the petrol tank would get smaller too. So the question was would the petrol contract more than the petrol tank? and what if you filled the tank to full, when the temperature increased would the tank overflow, but as the tank had a cap how does the engine deal with a push of petrol through the carburretor

You can see we had a busy day yesterday!!

    An alternative answer:

The best day would be timed such that it will just begin to cough and splutter as you drive it into the car dealer's as a trade in. Worked for me!

    Re: Petrol

I think most if not all cars have a vent on the petrol tank which is designed to prevent overflows due to expansion. The pump nozzle has a cut-out which would probably prevent you filling it completely to the top as well.

Perhaps one of the scientific gurus in the Lounge can give us a learned dissertation on the relative co-efficients of thermal expansion of steel and petrol?

I think you converted gallons to liters the wrong way round: 1 US gallon ~ 3.785 liters.

    Re: Petrol

Getting back to the original question, I'd imagine that a hypothetical situation like you describe would make that one of the worst days you'd ever filled your tank. You'd either lose

    Re: Petrol

Considering the taxes on fuel we have here, it's never your best day when you have to fill your tank.

You "think" correctly (though I bet that you really "Know" I was wrong ) I corrected the original post.

It is probably a good thing I am only a chemist and not a Rocket scientist. It could be disastrous if a rocket scientists made poor conversion error and something happened to one of the probes

    Re: Petrol

Not when the tanks are designed to not be full. It really shouldn't be an issue (but what do I know, I can't convert gallons to liters )

er, uhm so exactly how does one determine which is the coldest day of the year? Particularly since we have 257 to go!

257 coldest days out of the 357 left in this year? Switzerland isn't that cold, is it?

oops TYPO . No isn't cold. It was 9C today and the snow line (0C) is at 2600m. The snow, even up high, is like oatmeal. Got two weeks booked at the end of February and are hoping for better conditions than what we have seen so far.
