Imprisoned

A man has been imprisoned in a cell for murder, the cell is 5m wide 5m long and 5m high, the man is 2m high and can jump to a height of 3m with his arms outstretched, there is a grill at the top of the cell in the middle but that is all that is in the cell, it is the winter season and the prison is located near a beautiful lake, the walls of the cell are not climbable, the door is shut and cannot be opened from inside. The police go in one day and find that the man has gone from his cell and is no where in sight and all that is left is a small drop of water - how has the man escaped from his cell? I will accept 2 different answers for this.

The man has been captured once again and is imprisoned in the same cell, the grill has been removed and filled however, but this time there is a small table and a small saw in the cell, but nothing else, he escapes once again, but how?

OK Daniel

I reckon a stalagmite formed on the grill. Condensation formed and it froze, thus with a little effort he was able to climb up it and out of the grill

Possible Answer 1 There is an underground river that runs near his cell. The snow is melting in the mountains and the river rises, flooding his cell. After a while he is able to reach the grate and. hey presto, he is away.
Possible Answer 2 The guard let him out
Possible Answer 3 His fairy good mother flies in and waves her magic wand and he is out.

Possible Answer (after recapture) He takes the table and the saw and cuts it up to make a fake wall (including suitable appearance). The guard comes in to check, notices that he is gone and runs out to sound the alarm leaving the door open. Man follows guard out.

Re: Imprisoned

I like the answers you gave and they are, indeed, acceptable, but the ones i had in mind would have been as follows:

A) First capture - River overflows due to high rainfall, waterlogging freezes and ice blocks form over the grill which fall into the cell and he uses these blocks to escape.
He saws the table in half, then puts it back together again, 2 halves make a whole - he then puts this 'hole' into the wall, climbs throught the hole then starts shouting until he is hoarse, he then climbs onto the 'horse' and rides off into the sunset.

Re: Imprisoned

I couldn't see the significance of the single small drop of water left in the cell. Was this a red herring? With all the acceptable answers tendered, including your own, I'd have expected to find a significant pool of water below the grill.

What I am worried about is the idea that the river overflowed, which would cause the water to flow in through the grill. Hence raising the water level to a point where the prisoner could potentially drown, or rise to such a point thathe could float up and climb through the grill!

In fact during the flooding did a red herring swim in and he jumped on his back and was carried off

Re: Imprisoned

My only explanation could be that it evaporated as the temperature was warmer the next day when the police came in and being in such a hot cell it evaporated, as for th river overflowing it waterlogged the ground, which, in turn leaked into the grill slowly until it froze?

Cheers Dan

I can live with that one ( I don't about the others as we are a pedantic lot and always looking for the "alternative" answer)

I see you are becoming a regular on the puzzle area, keep them coming.
