    Windows startup

    I have an old verison of norton virus check come up every time I start windows 98. In the meantime, I am using norton system works. I do not want the old version to come up at startup. I have remaked out the line in autoexec.bat - to no avail. I see nothing in the startup folder for this old program, it is not listed under add/remove prgrams. What is a person to do?
    Thanks,

    Are you sure it's the old version? SW should have found and removed it. when is it coming up? you can control some boot programs from msconfig - type in the the run dialog (start menu)

    I am not a hundred percent sure. However, it uses virus definitions that are from 1998. The new norton has live updates.

    You could uninstall Norton's System Works, and then uninstall the older version if it is still there. But remove the coment from the Autoexec.bat first. If this cleans things up, then reinstall Norton's Works.

    Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Windows startup

    I'm not sure, but do a search for this line of text in auotexec.bat or any of the startup files:

    @C:PROGRA~1NORTON~1NAVDX.EXE /Startup

    This is what causes NAV to scan at bootup.

    Other possibilities:
    Look through the registry, if you're comfortable with that, at the Run, RunOnce, RunServices.

    You'll find them in or near:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun

    This will tell you what's loading.

    Or better yet: go to Start/Run/msconfig & press enter. Go to the startup tab & see if there's anything you can uncheck.

    Hope this helps.

    all version of win98 should have the msconfig utility - it lists all the start up locations and is safer than messing in the registry.
    start menu > run > type in msconfig
