'Troubleshooter' authoring tool?

I've been tasked with creating procedural documents for a client. It's occured to me that some sort of electronic performance support system, namely a troubleshooter application, would help the end users quite well. The problem is that I've never attempted such a project. I'm betting there's already some sort of application development tool that will support the creation of a troubleshooter.

(I was trying to find an example of a troubleshooter, of which there are many built into Windows, but for the life of me, I can't!)

Re: 'Troubleshooter' authoring tool?

I think most of the "troubleshooters" are just .CHM help file formats. Their operation is simply a function of how the topics are linked by hyperlinked questions like "Did this solve the problem?" or "Can you see the modem lights flashing?" I've not heard of an authoring tool geared around doing this. Maybe there's something like a binary tree diagramming tool to help with the logical construction of such a file.

Decision tree

Yeah, it's that decision tree part that I'm interested in. Ideally, something that worked like Visio would be good, but that's asking for a lot, I know. Creating this thing manually may prove my undoing otherwise.

Re: Decision tree

All I can think of in this capacity is flowcharting software.
An interesting looking one is Visual Thought 1.4... with an equally interesting looking licence:
"Because Visual Thought has been converted to shareware the following licence key is good for 13 years.

" ???

Dia is another ware I've heard of but not tried.

Take a look at Unicon Group Ltd. - Zavanta for information on a commercial product that is used to document procedures and best practices. I work for Unicon and we resell this product. Please use the contact form on the website for further information since anything else I say could be construed as a 'sell job'.

Jezsik

Might be your lucky day! I just chanced on Diagram Designer, ware that might be of some relevance to the task.
