    Customised Lounge Searches with Firefox / Mozilla

    With a big help from <!profile=jscher2000>jscher2000<!/profile>, I am posting "how to" instructions for searching Forums of your choosing from the "Search Bar" in Firefox.

    Limitations<UL><LI>The following cannot be changed "on the fly"<UL><LI>Board/Category searched<LI>Type of Search (viz): And / Or / By Username / StarPost etc<LI>Date Range<LI>Number of Posts per Page[/list]<LI>Effectively, you need to have a separate "canned" search "button" for each one of your "Favorite Forums"[/list]For each search you need:<UL><LI>a (plain text) script file ending in .SRC and <LI>an icon file<UL><LI>the format must be GIF, BMP, JPG or PNG<LI>the size must be 16x16 px (The same size as the Lex smilie)<LI>the name of the icon must be the same as the related script file<LI>omitting the icon will crash the dropdown list for searches - making all other search choices invalid<LI>the icon image can be a duplicate of an existing image - with merely a name change[/list]<LI>the script file and the icon should be placed in <UL><LI>.....Program Filesfirefoxsearchplugins or .....Program FilesMozilla.orgMozillasearchplugins - for Windows users<LI>/usr/lib/Mozilla/searchplugins<LI>/Applications/Mozilla.app/Contents/MacOS/SearchPlugins/ for Mac OS X or /Mozilla/searchplugins/ for anyone with an old Mac <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>[/list][/list]<UL>[/list]The search syntax is as follows:<pre><search
    version="7.1"
    name="[name you want in search bar]"
    description="[description you want on mouseover]"
    action="http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/dosearch.pl"
    searchform="http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/search.pl"
    method="GET" >
    <input name="Cat" value="[see below]">
    <input name="Forum" value="[see below]">
    <input name="Words" user="">
    <input name="Match" value="And">
    <input name="Searchpage" value="0">
    <input name="Limit" value="[results per page]">
    <input name="Old" value="allposts">
    </search></pre>

    Customisations:<UL><LI>"Cat" and "Forum" are mutually exclusive. One should be filled in with one of the (case-sensitive) categories below. The other must be left with no space between the two quotation marks.<LI>"Words" is where the text you enter into the Search Bar gets picked up<LI>"Match" is the type of Search (see above - under Limitations). The other choices are Or / Entire Phrase / Username / UserNewTopic / StarPost / MessNum / IPAddress<LI>"Searchpage" - with this set to 0 the first results given are the most recent ones<LI>"Limit" should (presumably) be set to the same number as in your profile<LI>"Old" determines how far back in time you want your search to stretch - use the standard time periods per the Search Page<LI>You'll need to close and reopen the browser each time you make a script change - for it to "take"[/list]The categories for "Cat" and "Forum" are as follows:

    <center><table border=1><td>Board Name</td><td>Code</td><td>Board Name</td><td>Code</td><td>Access</td><td>acc</td><td>Excel</td><td>xl</td><td>FrontPage</td><td>front</td><td>General Office Solutions</td><td>off</td><td>Lounge Matters</td><td>lounge</td><td>Other Browsers & Email Clients</td><td>net</td><td>Other OSes - Palm / Linux</td><td>palm</td><td>Outlook Express</td><td>oe</td><td>Outlook</td><td>out</td><td>PhotoDraw</td><td>photo</td><td>Powerpoint</td><td>ppt</td><td>Project</td><td>proj</td><td>Publisher</td><td>pub</td><td>Scuttlebutt</td><td>scut</td><td>Software Finds and Wants</td><td>free</td><td>Test Area</td><td>test</td><td>VB / VBA</td><td>vb</td><td>Web Design, Coding and Scripting</td><td>htm</td><td>Windows XP</td><td>xp</td><td>Windows 2000</td><td>2000</td><td>Windows 95</td><td>95</td><td>Windows 98</td><td>98</td><td>Windows CE (PocketPC)</td><td>CE</td><td>Windows ME</td><td>me</td><td>Windows NT</td><td>nt</td><td>WOPR Peer-to-Peer</td><td>wopr</td><td>Word</td><td>wrd</td><td>Words From On High</td><td>ann</td></table>

    Re: Customised Lounge Searches with Firefox / Mozi

    Thank you for this tutorial on creating search plugins.

    I have created various search plugins to experiment with (all forums, office, word, excel, windows, windows XP). I use the search bar extensively and this makes it very simple to do quick searches of the Lounge.

    Re: Customised Lounge Searches with Firefox / Mozi

    A minor update to the Customised Searches - for those of us who wish their Search Results to show up in Flat - not Threaded - Mode:<pre><search
    version="7.1"
    name="[name you want in search bar]"
    description="[description you want on mouseover]"
    action="http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl"
    searchform="http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl"
    method="GET" >
    <input name="Cat" value="">
    <input name="Board" value="[Board abbreviation - per list]">
    <input name="Number" user>
    </search></pre>

    This can also be used on Search Results - by highlighting the post # - on the left-hand side - & drag/dropping it into the Search Bar.

    N.B. You will need one for each Forum. Category-wide Searches by Post Number do not work.

    Edit: It is probably not immediately clear, but: the script in my first post to this thread conducts a Search by means of words; the script in this particular post conducts a Search by means of post number!
