Cells won't calculate (Excel 2000)

Hi all,
I have a problem where I have a cell that is meant to calculate the sum of the cells above it. As in a very simple financial spreadsheet.
The problem is that the cell which contains the formula (for example =SUM(E9:E21)) will not display the result, but continues to display $0.00.
I have not doubt there is a setting problem but I can't find it.
Any help appreciated.

Could it be that the cells contain text values (looking like numbers)? See what happens if you try one of the following:

A) Select a column with numbers that won't add.
Select Data | Text to Columns...
Choose Delimited.
Click Finish.

or

Select an empty cell.
Copy to the clipboard.
Select a range of cells with numbers that won't add.
Select Edit | Paste Special...
Choose Add.
Click OK.

If the formula is recalculated correctly now, the cells contained text values. If not, are you sure that calcution is set to automatic? Check this in the Calculate tab of Tools | Options...

Make suer that those cells are not formatted as Text. If they are, and you type a new number in any of those cells, it will be dropped from the calculation beause it will be entered into the cell as text.
