Little Sayings

One of the answers to <post#=441652>post 441652</post#> talks about a stalagmites coming down from the roof. Lyra_J makes short shift of that but this raises the issue of how do you remember that mites go up and tites go down?

Also, how do you remember ...

the figures in pi

the planets in the solar system (what about sedna?)

that the x-axis is the horizontal axis[/list]

    Re: Little Sayings

I learned that stalagtites had to hold on TITE to stay attached

    Pi : was just memorized
Planets mnemonic: Mary Visit Every Monday And Just Stays Until Noon Period (A is for the "asteroid belt")
X-Axis: "just know" from lots of use

the figures in pi - what, all of them!?
Planets mnemonic: My Very Earnest Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets

How about the relative spatial orientations of the (+) X, Y and Z axes?
The colo(u)r coding bands on resistors?

    Re: Little Sayings

I had a memory block on the x-axis until my teacher pointed out that the x-axis goes across (a 'X') the page. The 'girls tites go down' one for stalamites / tites never helped me because I couldn't get it staight if they were being put on or take off. I like the 'hold tite' one - I'll keep that - thx Steve.

    Re: Little Sayings

I always remember the stalagmite/stalactite 'thing' by looking at the middle(ish) letter. g for ground, c for ceiling...

Planets & Pi, memorized; and the x-axis, well it's not difficult is it??

Oops, just realised what I've written.. When I say I've memorized Pi, I meant just the first 10 digits, not ALL of it... Ahem.

You could always try to memorize Pi to 1,000,000 places

    Re: Little Sayings

I often used to cite an interesting little piece of trivia relating to PI, to students who asked about precision, accuracy, decimal places etc. Although it's been the obsession of some to keep calculating PI to more and more decimal places (1.24 trillion places being the current record I believe) consider this fact:

If one were able to draw a circle big enough to circumscribe the entire visible universe, and used a value of PI to a mere 39 decimal places to construct it, then the deviation of the circle from perfect circularity would be less than the daimeter of a proton!

For ALL intents and purposes, 39 decimal places can be considered to be "exact".

    pi to seven decimal places:

How I wish I could calculate pi.

    Fifteen decimal places of pi

How I like a drink, alcoholic of course,
after the heavy lectures involving quantum mechanics.

    Twenty-one digits of pi:

Now, I wish I could recollect pi.
    "Eureka," cried the great inventor.
    Christmas Pudding; Christmas Pie
    Is the problem's very centre.

    Thirty-one decimal places of pi

    [b]Sir, I bear a rhyme excelling
In mystic force, and magic spelling
    Celestial sprites elucidate
All my own striving can't relate
Or locate they who can cogitate
    And so finally terminate.[b]
