    duplicate personal folders (2003 sp1)

    Hi,

I got a new hard drive and decided to just start fresh with everything. So, I windows xp sp2, installed Office, copied my pst file over from the old drive, and then opened Outlook. For some reason, I now have duplicate personal folders. They truly do seem to be two instances of the same thing, as making a change to one (e.g. deleting a folder) makes the same change in the other.

I've done some searching. Most of the stuff I found about removing a duplicate personal folder suggested going into the control panel > mail and removing the duplicate. In my case, though, no duplicate is listed there.

If worse came to worse, I suppose I could live with this, but my whole point of starting from scratch was to give myself a nice "clean" setup.

    Appreciate any suggestions.

    Scott

Saw that one already (and variations). Unfortunately, the registry stuff doesn't seem to match up for xp. There's no "Windows Messaging Subsystem" key.

That's funny....HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging Subsystem (as well as a whole bunch of subkeys) is in my own WinXP Registry. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

Guess what. You're right. I was looking uder Windows, not Windows NT. Oops.

Doesn't matter, though, as I think I have solved the problem using the suggestion in post 337731. I had to delete my profile, create a new one, and then import the old pst file into the new one. It seems to have worked.

So, for anyone else who runs into the same problem and finds this post, here's specifically what I did:

    1. Make sure Outlook is closed.
    2. Open Control Panel > Mail.
    3. Click Show Profiles
    4. Remove the profile that is there.
    5. Open Outlook. It will prompt you to create a new profile.
    6. Once the profile has been created and Outlook has opened, click File > Import.
    7. Select Import from another program or file
    8. Select pst file
    9. Browse to your old pst file
    10. Follow the instructions to complete the import, making sure to select the option for combining it with your existing folder.
