VB Editor died..? (Office 2000 & XP)

HI all, wonder if anyone can help me..?
Some months ago, using Office 2000, I suddenly found I couldn't use the VB Editor any more. If I tried to open it, whichever Office app I was in would think for a few seconds, and then hang with an error message. On clearing the message, the app would quit. Though most of my VBA work is in Word, it can't have been anything I'd done there as the same symptoms would occur in Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
I completely un- and re-installed Office, but it didn't make any difference.
This week I upgraded to XP, and it still does it. Presumably somewhere along the line some vital file somewhere has got screwed up. Any ideas?

What is the exact text of the error message you get when you try to start the Visual Basic Editor?

Re: VB Editor died..? (Office 2000 & XP)

Well I can't remember what it was in 2000. In XP, it's (using Word as an example) "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." ... plus a standard thing about Word trying to recover lost data.

Clicking to see the error report gives me: "Error signature: AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 10.0.2627.0 ModName: vbe6.dll
    ModVer: 6.3.91.8 Offset: 001438a0", etc..

I've just tried it in PowerPoint and the error message is essentially the same (AppName & AppVer bits slightly different, obviously, but ModName, ModVer and Offset the same...).

    Does that help at all?

    Try the following:
    - Quit all Office applications.
    - Locate the file Vbe6.dll. The default folder is C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6.
    - Rename this file to Vbe6.old.
    - Start Word 2002 (or another Office XP app).
    - Select Help | Detect and Repair...

    Thanks for this HansV.
I'm not at my own machine at the moment, but when I get back to it I'll give this a try, and get back to you with news of how it went...

...Hmm. Sadly, that doesn't seem to have worked.

"Detect and Repair" prompted me for the CD, then re-created/re-installed vbe6.dll.

Trying to get into the VB Editor after it had done that, though, still produced the same error as before. What next?

I doubt that the following will help, but it'll take only a minute:
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regsvr32 /u "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6Vbe6.dll"
    - Press Enter.
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regsvr32 "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6Vbe6.dll"
    - Press Enter.
Note that the second regsvr32 is not followed by /u.

After that, I'm out of ideas, except for reinstalling your PC from scratch. Sorry.

Have you got any addins installed for the VBE?

Mine are listed in the registry, under:

    HKEY_USERSS-1-5-21-1957994488-764733703-725345543-1003SoftwareMicrosoftVBAVBE6.0Addins

The path after the number code is the one to look for I guess.

Re: VB Editor died..? (Office 2000 & XP)

    Thanks for these suggestions.

Pieterse, no, I had no addins for the VBE - didn't know you could have such things! (Still, I searched through the registry for 'Addins' and nothing appeared that was any sort of equivalent to the path you described.)

HansV, as you suspected, un- and re-registering the dll didn't make any difference.

On older machines with older operating systems I certainly might have been tempted to go down the 'complete reinstall' route (used to do that occasionally as general 'housekeeping' on 486 and earlier), but since mine is one of those machines on which WinXP was preinstalled and without separate disk(s), I'm not sure if/how I'd be able to do that...?

(Out of some vain hope I uninstalled Office XP, did a system restore to when I had 2000 installed and then tried your first suggestion again under Word 2000: still the same, no huge surprise... Should have tried a system restore when I first noticed the VBE problem I suppose, but didn't think of it then!)

I'm afraid I have no other suggestions. Sorry.

Edited by HansV to display description instead of extremely long URL that caused horizontal scrolling.

Re: VB Editor died..? (Office 2000 & XP)

I hadn't seen it: have now... Slightly different situation, obviously, but I had a go to see if running Windows in safe mode and/or disabling all the Acrobat templates/addins would make any difference. (They didn't).
Still, thanks to you both for your suggestions guys. It appears I can get a 'reload cd' from my PC vendor which will restore the whole system to its 'out of the box' state: a bit drastic I suppose, meaning I'll have to backup ALL my files first, but at least that's BOUND to resolve it!?!?!
