    W2K Update Trojans

I just formatted my hard drive and loaded Windows 2000 Professional. After doing the Windows Updates, I was bombarded with trojans. Is there any way to get the update without the trojans?

Tell us more about these "Update Trojans", i.e., name, what they do and etc?
Where are they being downloaded from?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

AVG called two of them backdoor.sdbot89.R and Y. There were others, but I didn't write those down. I also got a window while trying to do the update that told me to run fixerror.exe. I didn't do that, because I had heard it was not a legitimate command. Now, I'm all sluggish when I try to do anything.

This is a brand new clean install of Windows 2000-no service pack. I'm attempting to download whatever service pack is available when I do Update Windows. I have no firewall.

Get and install a firewall and anti-virus software as soon as possible, and anti-spyware sofware too. See these Star Posts:

    Re: W2K Update Trojans

I'd recommend that you go here: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and click on the 'SP4 network installation' link. Do not be put off by the title. It is Microsoft's peculiar phrasing to indicate the full service pack not just the pieces that Windows Update or the Express install determines you need now. That way you'll have the full service pack if you need to do this again and your PC has changed. After applying SP-4 be sure to go to Windows Update as there will be quite a few patches since SP-4 was released. You may want to back up your system after SP-4 and before the next round of patches.

As far as the A/V and firewall goes, if you have another machine available download them there and then burn a CD or use a LAN to get them to the PC your are setting up.

    K. Looks like everything's working now. Thanks so much for all the help! I'm running AVG, NIS, and PopUp Blocker! Hope this helps.
