Sticky Windows Search Results (XP Pro SP2)

Using Windows Search is there any way of making the order in which the search results are displayed stick? I have a search saved of a particular group of folders. The only files in these folders are Coreldraw files so I don't need the search results to tell me the file type. At the moment the results are in this order:

    Name, in folder, size, type

I would like it to be:

Name, size, date modified, in folder

I've right-clicked on the folder categories and used the more option to change the order to my liking but Windows doesn't remember the order. Moreover as soon as I do a search it defaults back to the Name, in folder, size, type order. It's really frustrating not having date modified show up immediately.

Does anyone know how I can change the search window and make the changes stick?

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

Re: Sticky Windows Search Results (XP Pro SP2)

    Chris,

I'm not sure if by "make the changes stick" you mean from one invocation of Search to another WITHIN the same session of XP or across sessions of XP (ie, a restart of XP or a powering off/on). But doing what you said worked for me. I used the More categories, moved the Size category up to be after Name, closed Search, re-opened it, and Size was still after Name. I did a search and it worked fine (Size stayed after Search). So the change stuck at least across invocations of Search. I haven't tried across a power cycle.

FYI: You can also just drag the column names to change the order of columns that are visible, as in other explorer-type windows. If you then right click a column name, the menu won't show a re-ordering but clicking on the More opens a dialog where the change you just made by dragging a column is reflected.

BTW: I'm using XP Home without any SPs installed.

Re: Sticky Windows Search Results (XP Pro SP2)

    Hi Fred,

Thanks for replying. I'd like the settings to stick even if I switch the computer off - at the moment they don't stay at all! I change the settings do a search and they switch back as the search completes, I can change them after doing a search but do a search and they switch back again. Not having the date is crazy... seems like something must be up. I have Windows XP Pro with SP2. Wonder if SP2 is the culprit?

    Best wishes,

    Chris

Re: Sticky Windows Search Results (XP Pro SP2)

    Hi Chris,

After I logged off the Internet this morning after my response to you, I did restart my system. The settings (Size after Name and before In Folder) did stick when I opened the Search program. I also had done some searches and had no problems; the columns stayed as I set them. Not sure if you'd count a restart as a power cycle; I haven't turned off my computer since this morning. I'll check tomorrow morning (PC is off over night).

Maybe it is SP2. I've resisted installing it so far. Maybe this is another reason? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
