    typing lags (2003)

We upgraded to Office 2003 in July and since then, we have had the annoying problem (on roughly 20 out of 400 computers) where typing lags. For example, you are typing along and the words don't show up until you click the mouse or press enter.

We have done a ton of research on this, but sigh, not enough I guess. We did all the usual ... remove all templates-addins; rename/delete normal.dot; delete temp files...

We thought it was USB optical mice causing it. But, no. We only have USB mice on a few of the pcs that have problems.

The common thread we found so far is that 18 out of the 20 "problem" users have Adobe Acrobat 6 on them. When we delete the pdfmaker.dot from the templates-addins and the Word startup folder, that fixes the problem. But, without the pdfmaker.dot file in the templates/add-ins, the users can't create bookmarked PDF files. All they can do is print to a virtual pdf printer, which doesn't make bookmarks.

We recently found 2 users who don't have optical mice, don't have Acrobat, don't have any templates/addins, don't have anything in the Word startup folder, don't have any macros, don't have any customizations. The only fix for them is to rename/delete the normal.dot. But it's a temporary fix and the problem keeps coming back.

    Any suggestions?

    Some background:

    All pcs are configured with:

    Windows 2000
    Office 2003 Professional
    Novell Groupwise 6.5
    Internet Explorer 6.0

This problem happens on standalone PCs as well as ones on our Novell network.

MOST problem PCs have Adobe Acrobat 6 loaded.
A couple of them have USB optical mice, but most are not.
Most are towers, a couple are laptops.

Do the PC's have enough RAM (512 MB or more)?
Have you checked for spyware and viruses?

Yes, we have plenty of RAM. We have run virus scans - no viruses. Our dat files are up to date. We ran Adaware and Spybot to scan for malware and spyware. We have uninstalled/reinstalled Office. Note that the only app affected is Word. This is not an issue in any of the other Office programs, email, or any other program. It's not like the program is running slowly either. You can change screens, select menu items, etc. without any sluggishness. You just can't see what you type!

Just a wild guess: some anti virus programs, such as Norton Anti Virus, have an Office Plugin that causes all kinds of problems. It can be turned off without compromising security. For Norton:
    - Start the NAV console.
    - Click Options.
    - Click Miscallaneous in the Other section.
    - Clear the check box for 'Enable Office Plug-in'.

    Typing lags (2003)

We are still having this problem so I am replying in the hopes that someone will have figured this out or has more ideas. The last thing we checked was for spyware, viruses, etc. No problems there. We use McAfee virus protection so it's not a Norton conflict. There are no templates or add-ins loaded. No files in the Word startup folder.

This used to be an issue for us when we had Adobe Acrobat 6 pdfmaker.dot loaded in the add-ins/templates. But in the last two instances, Acrobat isn't loaded on the machine at all.

I submitted this question to a Microsoft newsgroup, but no one had any ideas. We are about ready to ghost the PCs and start over, but what a hassle.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

Is there any difference between views (Normal, Print Layout)?

    Is speech enabled?
