REMOVETHIS email addresses (OE 6 XP SP2)

    Hello,

Sometimes in Newsgroups when I write a reply I see that the original sender has extra characters/words in their email address. I guess this is to stop the address being harvested automatically by some bot. What I would like to know is:

    1. How is this done?
    2. Can it be done with Outlook Express?
    2. If so, can it be set up to work for groups like yahoogroups or is it only for news-servers?

    Thanks very much,

    Chris (Hunt)

Thanks for the reply, Dave. I don't like to post someone's email address on a list but it might be something like jamesREMOVETHISjoyce@server.com. I guess the email address without REMOVETHIS is legitimate. It's something a human can understand but would catch out a harvesting bot out. The phrase to remove might be anything and sometimes poeple give cryptic clues in their signature lines.

You've got it. Simply remove the REMOVETHIS from the address and it will work. And your reasoning is correct as well. This prevents bots from harvesting the address. If a bot uses it, it won't work because it is incorrect. Only a human, so far, can understand and correct the problem.

Re: REMOVETHIS email addresses (OE 6 XP SP2)

Thanks for the confirmation, Doc. So in Outlook Express I go through Tools - Accounts - Properties to access the Email Address and the Return Email Address. For newsgroups should I change both addresses or just the Return Address? For Yahoo groups will changing the reply address make any difference or is there still some way that the real address could be found - I guess I need the real address otherwise I won't be able to post to the group.

Glad to help. I don't use newsgroups, and would hesitate to make any changes that would have an effect on All my correspondence for just one service I was using. Can you change your address settings in the newsgroup (like we do here in the lounge) to add REMOVETHIS, or whatever, to your address there ?? That would be preferable to changing your settings on your system.

The trouble with this is that the spammers have gotten smarter, and now know what some of the more common used terms are and can clean up these addresses.

Re: REMOVETHIS email addresses (OE 6 XP SP2)

Thank you both. I have several mail addresses, so I am only thinking of changing the settings for the ones that I use openly. I'm trying to extend the life of the email addresses. Anything to slow the spammers down. I was thinking of putting a clue in the signature line which would inform people how to edit the address. I wasn't going to use anything too ordinary. But with yahoo groups I wonder if the process is effective. With newsgroups it is easy to use a fictitious email address and still access the server to download messages in Outlook Express, but with Yahoo Groups one communicates by sending emails. It is necessary to use a real address to send and receive messages. The return address can be altered but could robots still find the original address used to send the message?

Why put any email address in any newsgroup posting?

I thought it was required? Is it possible to remove one completely?

Most that I have been to, require a email address to post but NOT included within the posting.

    What newsgroups are you using?

Re: REMOVETHIS email addresses (OE 6 XP SP2)

I'm a member of lots of newsgroups, mainly to do with the software I have. I think Outlook Express requires that an email address is given. When I tried to remove an email address from a newsgroup account it gave me an error message.. Perhaps I'm confused, or being confusing. What I mean is the email address that shows up when selecting reply to group or reply to sender. The previous email appears in the body of the email along with the original senders email address.

This is the way I have my setting at the MS newsgroups and it does NOT display a email address.

Re: REMOVETHIS email addresses (OE 6 XP SP2)

Thanks Dave, my settings are the same. But if I go to a message I've written in, eg the CorelDraw 12 Newsgroup and reply to it my email address appears in the body of the email.. It will say something like:

    "Chris Hunt"
wrote in message news: message number

Followed by the text of the message. I think it is possible to edit the email address and include some phrase like REMOVETHIS to make it less harvestable. I haven't been able to work out a way to do this with Yahoo Groups..

(Edited by DaveA on 19-Jan-05 19:55. )
Ok, I just post a reply at corel.test using the same settings and the email address is NOT posted.

Are you selecting the "Reply Group" from the OE newsreader toolbar?

    Edit,
I have also visited several threads I do NOT see any email addresses posted.
