    Replying to Posts

<font color=448800><font face="Comic Sans MS">When I reply to a post and it appears so far down in the link it's not obvious what post or to whom I'm responding. What am I doing wrong? I checked out Edit Profile, etc. but could not locate anything that would remedy this. I did a test using Eileen's post reference to Mel Gibson. My [flat] display shows my post [b]waaaaay[b]below her post, although I clicked on "reply to post", so it is unclear what my post is all about. So what am I not doing right?/Where am I going wrong?</font face=comic></font color=448800>

    Re: Replying to Posts

Your display is set to descending date - i.e. your post is waaaay below hers because of the intervening posts.
You may want to fiddle with your display preferences but I don't think there is a direct answer.
Looking at the threads having first selected the forum, you should see the list of posts as below - this shows your new post as a reply to Eileens, and on a par with that of MarkJ, as you have 'equal billing'.
When viewing the post, you can toggle between Flat and Threaded mode by using the <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/flat.gif> and <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/threaded.gif> buttons top right.
    Does that make sense?

Flat shows them like that - the way they come in. Switch to Threaded for a clearer picture.

    Re: Replying to Posts

    I had a ponderance after looking at that MONSTER <img src=/S/frank.gif border=0 alt=frank width=15 height=15> thread in Scuttlebutt... <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>!

What I wanted to do was to somehow morph the flat and threaded views to provide the best of both worlds. What I came up with is really an enhancement to the flat view, which gives the impression of threaded information.

Flat vs. Threaded is a bit of a tradeoff. Either you marvel at the clarity of who posted to what, and re-load everytime you want to proceed, or you suffice to a view that is <img src=/S/puke.gif border=0 alt=puke width=60 height=15>-ed on the page, and very confusing at times, but requires no re-loading.

My answer to this is to include colors of some sort. My thinking is that there are no more than 32 threads per topic, before the topic is locked. Each thread is assigned a color, primaries first, etc. The colors can then be assigned to the post numbers, (see picture) To give everyone an idea of who is replying to what, even in <img src=/S/puke.gif border=0 alt=puke width=60 height=15>-ed (flat) mode. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>

I was also playing with the table alignment, which is why the picture looks the way it does.. That might get a bit overwhelming at times, tho.. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Yeah, I was just playing with that.. that might get a bit <img src=/S/hairy.gif border=0 alt=hairy width=15 height=15>... but the colors would be helpful.. no?

Then I'd have to clear half the junk off my desk so I can scroll along enough to the right to see the 16th thread.

    Re: Replying to Posts

Hmmm. What if colour-blindness strikes halfway through reading a thread?

What would be nifty would be the "<font color=blue>re: 41057</font color=blue>" text also being a hyperlink to a bookmark (i.e. not a new page) for the referred-to post. So viewing in threaded mode (I think I'm in threaded, I get so confused) simply slides the screen down.

Clicking your back button ( don't start ! ) would simply take you back to the referring post.

    Hang on for the upgrade. That's what you'll get then. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Ooohhh. <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>

Thank you Mummy (and Scream). I generally use flat and do a "find" on the post no. to which an item refers if I get confused...

    Re: Replying to Posts

Hmm, now I'm more confused - I've got mine set to threaded, and have the same issue Patricia reports - if there are intervening sub-threads, then my reply to an earlier post shows up waaay down the thread - real hard to follow what's what.

This did work differently in the old Lounge (if rapidly failing memory serves<g>) - replies would 'glue' themselves right up under the post they were replying to - this made it much easier to follow the different sub-threads. Always wondered why it worked differently then vs. now, but figured it was just some obscure setting which I've got set wrong!

It still works that way - it's just that some of these threads are very long and convoluted.

    I second that Ooohhh <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>

Meantime, or anyway, having "re: 41119 (Eileen)" would also be neat.

    Re: Replying to Posts

Gary: Yes, I miss the "glue" factor from the old Lounge as well. Thanks, Leif & Eileen: I did switch to threaded but came back to flat - much preferred. But sometimes it's difficult to figure out if someone is replying to me or if the post is to someone else.
A friend gets the Daily Archive of Word and it is a bit confusing. But if you scroll down you see the response to the post in question. It's a darn good board, despite the [temporary] confusion on occasion . . .

    Re Leif & Drk Realm's suggestons: <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
I like them both. Colours would help; a bookmark to the post you are replying to would be fantastic, if achieveable.
