Interpolation option not active? (Excel XP >)

Any idea why the interpolation option is greyed out. I would like to use it sothat the underlying chart does not plot the blank cells in my spreadsheet?
What could make the option inactive? How can I get it active again?
    Regards,
    Rudi

Interpolation is only available for line charts and scatter (XY) charts. In other chart types, including mixed charts in which one or more of the series are displayed as line charts, interpolation is not available.
To get interpolation, change the entire chart to a line chart. Turn on interpolation. Then select a series and change it to a column chart. Repeat until all you have done this for all series that you want to be displayed as column charts.
