    Problem with regedit and regedt32

    Hello everybody!

Today, I realized a very interesting problem on Win2K. Due to an installation problem, I am forced to edit some registry-keys directly. Since I need the type REG_MULTI_SZ, I have to use regedt32 (which is recommended by Microsoft anyway). The only problem is, that I do not find the values in my required key. I find the key itself, but not the values included. If I use regedit, I see both key and related values. I have already checked permissions for this key within regedt32, it shows full access. Does anybody know, why I am not able to see the values within regedt32?
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Best regards, Porley

Re: Problem with regedit and regedt32

    Hello Leif

Thanks for your quick answer. I know this article already, but it does not include the solution for my problem. It perfectly explains why I cannot do the work with regedit and have to use regedt32. But it does not explain, why I see values within regedit, which I denfinitely do not see within regedt32. The value I have to edit it of type REG_MULTI_SZ, which is not supported by regedit.

    Best regards, Porley

Make sure that View | Tree and Data is selected. Also, make sure that you have correct permissions for the key.

    Hello Joe

Thanks for the hint. I have checked the permissions, they say full access. Also View | tree and data is enabled. It seems, the problem is somewhere else.

Yes, it's SP4. Does this give you an idea?

Not specifically. It is just that there are still people who are not up-to-date with fixes and there are sometimes things buried in service packs that are not generally know publically.

Can you post a screen shot of the key you need to modify?

Unfortunately not. My colleague was faster than me and has reinstalled the system, this time without the software that wrote the key. Nevertheless I would like to know what went on there.

Is the software installed on another Win2k system? Can you see the key there? Are you sure you were looking in the same part of the registry - HKCU & HKLM have similar structures?

Re: Problem with regedit and regedt32

Sorry for owing you the answer that long. Well, there is no other computer installed with W2K, since this one is the last one in our company. But I am very sure that both regedt32 and regedit showed the same key on the same position. It is just like I wrote before: with regedit you can see the values but cannot edit because of types regedit does not support, and with regedt32 you will not see the values. We have changed the operating system to XP, and here the problem does not occur, so we have a solution now, but I really would like to know...

Without knowing the problem software and without a machine to observe and change it is pretty much impossible to find an answer.
