Sign up for Office 12 beta? (N/A)

Sorry if this is the wrong area in which to post, but didn't know where this would fit.

It looks like my company's one significant client is going to upgrade from Office 2000 to Office Whatever-Comes-After-XP (Office 12?). I will need to prepare "Upgrading from..." documentation so I need to have the beta versions at the earliest possible opportunity (I've seen rumors that first beta is slated for August '05).

How does one typically get "on the list" for an Office beta? What/where should I watch for word of the opportunity to sign up for the next Office beta? I've never had to before, so I'm a neophyte where this is concerned. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Office-Whatever-Comes-Next-After-XP was Office 11 a.k.a. Office 2003. I presume you are not referring to that - which has been publicly available for some time.

On the basis of recent performance, Microsoft will have at least one "Public" Beta for Office 12. This will be the "close to final" (but quite possibly still somewhat buggy and subject to change) product. You will have to pay for "the postage & handling". It is unlikely to be available for download.

Going further back into the development chain, there will be earlier releases which will be available to specified long-established contacts of Microsoft. These are usually subject to a Non-Disclosure Agreement. At this stage, the list is almost certainly closed.

A final possibility is the Universal (and possibly Professional?) MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) Subscription holders. They also receive Beta copies of MS software. It sounds like your company would not fall within that area, but more details on MSDN are available from http://msdn.microsoft.com/.

Yes, I mean post-Office 2003 - I keep forgetting that one's out there, for whatever reason.

We had MSDN until November of this year because we were paying so much for it and receiving so little of value (to us) in return - couple of grand a year to get inundated with new programs we never use just seemed like throwing good money at bad intentions. Sigh - I guess we'll have to hunker down on the MSDN teat again pretty soon. Thanks for the advice.

You could look into MS Technet Plus. It's quite a bt cheaper than a lot of MSDN subscriptions, and does publish some Beta and NFR evaluation versions of MS software.

    Jim,

I think you're right - their site specifically mentions that they include betas of Office. It's a promising lead. Thanks!

When the beta has started, you can check out https://beta.microsoft.com and see if you can join.

I would check carefully, because I don't have any new Office beta on my Technet Plus DVDs (as at January 2005)...

But then it hasn't made the MSDN Universal Subscription yet either.

They don't include all the software fo betas and evals in Technet plus. I don't know what the criteria is.

Hopefully, they will include more now that they are upping the price from 549 to 799 a year, and using the software as a marketing point.
