Relational DB from flat tables (Access 2000)

    Hello all.

I have a "quick" question regarding the transformation of a couple of flat excel tables into a relational design. Please verify if this is the right approach (and tell me if there are better methods!!!).

    My approach:
Starting with the flat tables (excel), I'll identify the tables (Access) to be designed and then design them (and the relationships).
I'll populate each table with the unique entries from the flat tables.

Now here's the question: To place the indices from the "1-to" table into the "many" table do I run some queries on the original flat tables to identify whose indices should be added?

I'm not sure if I'm going about this right...

Add foreign key fields to the old tables, but don't set the relationships yet.
You can use a series of update queries in which you link a new table to an old one on the field or fields that uniquely identify a record on the "one" side, an update the foreign key field on the "many" side with the primary key of the "one" side. After you have done this, you can relate the tables on the key fields.
