Access Pivot Tables (Win XP IE ver 6)

When I move to PivotTable view, in the Field List the fields appear with a + sign to the left. When I click the + sign, the same field appears a second time indented. There does not appear to be any difference in the operations using either one. What is the difference?

For a date field, there will be various grouping options. But it's not very elegant to have all those useless +es.

    - You can;t get rid of the +es.
    - If there is only one item in the expanded list, it doesn't matter whether you use that, or its "parent".
