Lost Sound Win XP

Please help. I lost my sound when trying to use Winamp and Windows media player. Error says no audio hardware is available or the hardware is nor responding. I removed the sound card, started the computer, reinstalled the soundcard thinking the computer would recognize new hardware and it did, but still no sound. Any ideas??? Thanks...

A few obvious things to try (if you haven't already):
a) Does Winamp or WMP still giving you an error message?
Are your external speakers plugged in and turned on?
c) Is the connection between your sound card and your speakers OK?
d) Are the volume controls (in Windows, Winamp, WMP or the speakers) turned all the way down or muted?
