Always forcing me to Save (Word 2002/XP Pro sp2)

I'm suddenly having a problem with Word forcing me to save before closing a file, even if no changes have been made. This has only been happening for the last few days, on files I've been working on for awhile. I suspect that a preference file is damaged - but I don't know which one controls this behavior, or even if I'm correct. I've also tried saving a file with a new name, but the same thing happens: open file, then immediately click to close, and I am asked to save.

I'm not sure what I'm dealing with. Most importantly, I'm afraid that at some point the file itself will be corrupted, and then I'll have REAL problems. Thanks.

Save your work, either

(a)
Ctrl-A (to select the document contents)
Ctrl-C (to copy to the clipboard
Ctrl-F4 (to close the failing document)
Ctrl-N (to start a new document)
Ctrl-V (to paste from the clipboard)
Ctrl-S (to save, with a new name)

or

(
File, saveAs, type RTF

or

Ctrl-N (to start a new document)
Alt-Insert, fiLe (to insert text from your failing file)
Ctrl-S (to save with a new name).

Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> contains a step-by-step description of the "tricks" Chris mentions.

Re: Always forcing me to Save (Word 2002/XP Pro sp2)

In addition to the possibilities listed by ChrisGreaves in his second reply to you, this may be happening for nothing more than one of the following reasons:
<UL><LI>New Printer was installed
<LI>Same printer, but a new driver was installed with your last Windows Update
<LI>Document contains a date or other automatic field
<LI>Word Versioning feature is turned with autosave is turned on
For the last item go to File / Versions and check to make sure the "Automatically save a version on close" is unchecked. Other options which may affect this are located at Tools / Options:
<UL><LI>Save / Allow Fast Saves
<LI>General / Background Repagination
<LI>General / Update Automatic Links at Open
If it's none of the above (or if modifying them has no effect), then I too would direct you to Phil Rabichow's post as linked in Hans' reply.

Good luck!
Karen

The Smart Tags status can also trigger this behaviour - see <!mskb=816473>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 816473<!/mskb>. Are your (Office) Service Packs up to date (SP3)?

DAMN!, I'm glad I found you folks! I don't remember where I first found this site, but luckily I had bookmarked it, then found it again when I was trying to figure out what to do about this latest issue. With the document in question, I do a fair amount of pasting links, text, etc. from misc. sources, so something about Smart Tags may have come into play via that added text. When I went to the KB article on Smart Tags, that seemed to describe my problem. Sure enough, I had ST checked. I unchecked it, and now that forced saves are gone. I'll keep monitoring it - but so far, you seem to have found the solution.

Thanks again for your INSTANT help. You're a great resource.

> suspect that a preference file is damaged

Does this behaviour happen only with a particular file? If so, I suspect that that particular file is corrupt, and should be re-fabricated as soon as possible.

If the behaviour occurs on several files, then it does indeed sound as if something in your environment is corrupt.

Depending on your depth of knowledge and desire to pinpoint the root cause, your simples solution may be to de-install and re-install MS-Word.

There are subtle tricks that may restore your sanity short of a re-install, such as deleting Normal.dot, deleting all temporary files, disabling your startup folder, deleting the infamous Data key in the registry. ....

Thanks to Hans for the post that he is about to make mentioning Phil's post. (grin!)

> but luckily I had bookmarked it

That's not luck, it's just plain common-sense.

Now in your browser you'll need to "Manage Bookmarks" and move the WOW bookmark to the left-hand side - first thing you click before news, streaming radio, Funnies etc.

Also, you could make it your default page in your browser ..... (grin!)

Of course, if you've decided to use FireFox, you'll be interested in This <post#=442851>post 442851</post#>.

Once you track down the cause, or at least the solution to your problem, I'd/We'd like to hear about it.

(BTW, I TOLD you all Hans was going to add a posting to my post!)

I believe that was done in <!post=the post to which you refer,445959 >the post to which you refer<!/post> . BTW, I was unaware that Hans is to refrain from posting once you have made a suggestion?

8 minutes. That's a lot better than your (earlier) 2 hours!
