Read only attrib wont change to off (Win XP Pro SP 2 Dell oem

I am having some issues changing the Read only attribute in Windows XP. My account does have administrator rights. When I use Windows Explorer to view various folders and files, I pick the read only box to off. I then apply. I get the box asking if I want to apply this change to this folder or to all subfolders and files in those folders. I say I want the "-r" applied to ALL. When pick this option, the program seems to be doing what I ask, except, the change isn't made.

I have tried over and over without success. I could do a Dos shell I guess and handle it that way; but that wouldn't explain WHY it isn't working.

    Any ideas?

Thank you in advance for any input.

Is this in a system folder? Can you get it to work on other files?

Regular folders only. I moved some data from another computer. I copied the files from a cd.

Copying from a CD explains why they would be RO.
A quick search in this forum brought up various threads containing "read attrib", including Joe's <post#=329963>post 329963</post#> - any help there?

That looks like exactly what I needed. Thank you very much. Going to eat some supper just now; but, will explore in detail later and let you know if this doesnt do the trick.

The read only attribute is only meaningful for files that are not folders, since folders should never be written by ordinary user code.

Windows XP always displays folders as Read-Only and you cannot clear this attribute for a folder.

    Stuart,

That makes perfect sense. Dont know why I didnt think of it earlier. Previous attempts to turn off RO must have been working all along. I just checked and sure enough, the files IN the folders are not read only. Thank you again.
