    CD Green Light Stays On

On the computer on which I am writing this, if I put a CD in the CD drive, the green light that shows drive activity comes on briefly and then goes off. The drive makes a lot of noise at first as the CD spins up and this becomes quiet. I assume, but don

Re: CD Green Light Stays On

I think the answer depends on whether the green light means the motor is running or not, and perhaps the documentation that came with the drive may explain. Personally, I have never come across the green light indicating anything other than activity of some sort, but in your case it may simply indicate a CD is in the drive.
Otherwise, if the motor is running continuously, I would suggest there is a problem as CD drive motors are not built with the same longevity as HDs.

(You don't have some Indexing service running that is checking the contents of the CD by any chance?)

Re: CD Green Light Stays On

Just a couple of crazy comments in addition to what Leif said. I've not seen this happen with CD devices, but with a floppy drive the light will stay on if you connect the cable backwards. Assuming you CAN access a disc in the drive, that would not be the case of course. Are you able to read CDs (either commercial or otherwise) from the drive? As Leif said, for the most part the light on a drive, either CD or CD/RW, is usually on only during activity, but it seems to me that I have seen one or two in which the light indicated a disc in the tray and would blink during activity. As to whether "spinning" stops when the device is idle, I dunno. It's like the light inside the fridge... <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19>

I don't know about you, but my 'fridge light doesn't sound like a cd drive going full belt!

I have a Plextor drive that has a continuous yellow light when a disc is inserted. When there is activity, this particular drive changes to a green indicator.

My guess is that unless you hear the CD drive winding up when the light is on, then it's nothing to worry about.

[quote]but with a floppy drive the light will stay on if you connect the cable backwards. /quote]

Since most IDE cables are "keyed", it's unlikely that the OP could have reversed the cable.

Personally, I've pretty much given up trying to understand what the CD drive could be doing. My biggest mystery what's actally going on after I press the eject button. Usually the sequence of events after I press the button is

    1) Pause
    2) drive spins up
    3) light flashes rapidly for up to 15 seconds, signfiiy the reading of _a lot_ of data
    4) Pause
    5) eject

What the heck could be going on there?

    Jim,

CD-ROM or CD-RW? IF RW, could be queued up writes.
