IE 5.5 ignoring Default Printer Settings

    <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>
Can anyone tell me why my IE5.5 setup appears to be ignoring my default printer settings?

I'm running Windows ME and IE 5.50.4522.1800. I have an HP LaserJet 4000 with a duplex unit and I use the PCL6 driver v 4.3.2.44 build 1108 CRel 1108 as my default printer, configured to print on both sides of the paper. Every application I have uses this setup successfully - except Internet Explorer.

If I use the print icon on the toolbar, the pages come off simplex. If I choose File|Print, the PCL6 driver is selected, but it still prints simplex. I have to go into the properties and deliberately set it to duplex. As I often end up with several browser pages open at the same time, (I'm a big user of the "Open in New Window" option), each instance of Explorer wants to print simplex unless I tell it otherwise. I would have thought that browser windows opened as children of earlier windows in this way would inherit the parent window's settings, but this doesn't appear to be the case.

I'm fairly sure that this isn't a machine problem as the same thing happens at work using NT4 SP4 and an HP LaserJet 4Si.

While not a showstopper, it's annoying and I'm curious to find out why it won't inherit all of the default settings.

Has anyone else out there come across this problem and does anyone have a fix?

    Many thanks in anticipation...
    Regards,

    Steve

    I'm still looking, I have the same problem using IE5.5 on Win98. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

If you do find a solution please post here and I'll do the same. Good luck! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: IE 5.5 ignoring Default Printer Settings

Some digging on the Microsoft Tech Support website brought references to two documents: Q271822 and Q265004.

The former suggests amending a Registry setting but I can't confirm its effectiveness. I'm using Win NT 4 SP4 at work and the solution is quoted is for Win 98 and Win 98SE. The entry in question doesn't appear to occur in my NT4 registry, though the problem is still apparent. I'll have to check the registry on my WinME system for this when I get home this evening.

The second paper acknowledges that changes to the duplex printing default within IE 5.5 aren't remembered from one print job to the next. It doesn't say, however, that Microsoft are working on a fix - just that they confirm it's a problem with IE5.5 used with Win 95, 98 and 98SE. (The last reviewed date for this article is March 10 2001, but WinME isn't mentioned. )

The workaround is suggested as creating a new printer object just for printing from IE and force it to be duplex for all jobs, but that takes us back to the first article...

    Nice bit of circularity here... <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23>

    Hope this helps.

Re: IE 5.5 ignoring Default Printer Settings

People have probably already discovered this but I'll add it here for completeness. Redmond appear to have got it right with IE6.

I'm now using the version of IE6 that's bundled with XP but also used v6 final release with my ME system before the upgrade and it used my default print settings (incl. duplex) perfectly, as well as allowing on-the-fly changes to those settings to be inherited by child windows.

    In short, a winner.

Now why did it take so long...?
