    Paint replacement

    A <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> replacement for the very basic Paint program: Paint.NET.

From the site: "Paint.NET is jointly developed at Washington State University with additional help from Microsoft, and is meant to be a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with all Windows operating systems. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with GDI+ extensions."

Looks pretty slick. I'm going to give this a go as my lightweight editor and see how it does.

Yep, my thoughts too. I doubt that they will run out of programming talent either. I liked the following from the site:

"Paint.NET has many of the powerful features that expensive commercial applications have, including the ability to use layers. This is the second semester that Paint.NET has been a project at Washington State University, and we have the goal of adding as much functionality as expensive commercial applications provide, but of course, for free!"

I hadn't thought of it in that light, Joe. That's a worthy and globally beneficial project for a school to take on, rather than some locally limited, nonsense programming. I too think I'll keep an eye on this link. (Many of us may remember how Mosaic (*) got started and how far it's been!)

(*) Have I got the name right?

Edited: The Lounge just had a coughing spell and I got a dupe post, so I deleted one. Hope it settles down.

    Al,
Coughs seem to be going around. I've acquired one (from one of my grandsons I think). Must be the darn winter weather.

    Re: Paint replacement

I'm not following its development Joe, since it's .NET, but I came across this possibly interesting companion article:
    The Code Project - Writing (simple) effect plug-ins for Paint.NET 2.0 in C# - C# Programming.

I spent a year at WSU, Pullman Washington, so I suppose I should really make the effort to take a look at it.
