Re: Styles appear in 2000 disappear in 2002-3 (2000/2002)

I have no idea what causes this, but when I open the document in Word 2002, the Style of all paragraphs is Nothing. If I export to RTF and reopen, all paragraphs are set to Normal. So there is some kind of corruption in the document, and I don't think there is anything you can do about it in Word 2002 or higher. If there is a solution at all, it'll have to be in Word 2000 of that opens the document correctly.

Styles appear in 2000 disappear in 2002-3 (2000/2002)

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

I have a bunch of documents that were created long ago on an unknown version of Word. They have styles in them to arrange the text into an outline format. They look fine in Word 2000 but if I open one of them in Word 2002 or 2003, the styles and associated formatting are missing. There are screen shots here and a sample .doc file exhibiting the problem is available for download: http://blizzard.zmm.com/word/index.htm

I need a way to open these in 2002+ and preserve the styles, preferably without having to do any voodoo in 2000 first.

Hey Joe -- If you open the file in WordPad and save it, then open in WordXP it looks ok... assuming that none of that number is supposed to be automated. Sorry -- I don't have access ot 2000 to test it out for you.

That preserves the formatting, but loses the style definitions, which the end users need. The people using these docs are using a third party app called "Master Spec" (some kind of automation gadget for building architectural specification documents) that I don't know much about.
