    Various XP Problems (XP Professional)

Got a few problems with a new XP i just bought to upgrade my 98 - i don't have much experience with XP but here are my problems:-
A 'Messenger Service' keeps appearing with various messages about my computer being doomed etc.
My internet is clogged up with something and i don't have a clue what it is but i can't play my beautiful online games smoothly on 3000ms ping - it may be the windows update but it's not showing the the taskbar...
I had no problems with any of this with 98 so i figured it must be an xp problem

In addition to Hans' suggestions, make sure you have XP SP-2.

But clean up the junk before you attempt to DL and apply SP2. It's a big DL and with the system not working well on the internet, it would be more efficient to get the system running right before applying a major update like SP2. Shutting down Messenger and running Spybot and Adaware se will go a long way toward getting the bugs out and preparing for SP2.

Being that you were running 98 tell us more about the machine it's self. ram, CPU and speed and etc. Remember that most older 98 machines were NOT XP ready and also a lot of older games.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Are you certain that you disabled/removed the Windows Messenger service ?? If you only disabled or removed the MSN Messenger service you didn't get the source of those pop-ups. You can download a utility to remove Messenger here. Or check out more options in this Google search. HTH.

Re: Various XP Problems (XP Professional)

my machine was built for XP but the reason i put 98 on was because i could not get ym ISP software to work on xp - but after learning a way to do this i have put it onto xp now.
Another problem i encountered was that one of the games i play - the FPS seems to suffer and claims high packet loss and latency etc. but not lag - i believe the lag problem has been fixed now. I am still recieveing boxes titles Messenger Service with virus messages etc. even though i removed Windows messenger using the guide - any suggestions? other than those now my system appears to be fine - can anyone recommend a good graphics card(256mb) - i am currently looking at Radeon ranges but nVidia is out of the question. Many thanks to the help you give guys - <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

This sure seems like the Messenger service is not disabled? Can you post a picture of one of the messages?
