Thank you, thank you, thank you.

If you can't figure out by now, I want to thank you all for your tremendous help and insight.

I ran across a problem (which you can see the discussion about <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=vb&Number=40491&page=0&view =expanded&sb=5>here</A>) that really perplexed me. I was smashing my head against a brick wall! <img src=/S/smash.gif border=0 alt=smash width=30 height=26>

The problem was that many/all of our templates reference many files on the old server, which is currently still active. For some reason, Word took umbrage with that. This was causing Word to crash repeatedly. I know for some, this is small number, but with nearly 200 users, we had to move with alacrity to get this fixed.

Finally today, our VB6 programmer found that if we removed the references pointing to the old server and add the references to the new server, the file would not crash on you. Three of us followed these instructions on different files ("bad" ones), and then tested the files. Everything worked okay. I than had another person in the office test those three files, and they worked okay.

Where you folks really helped was with the code I will be using to programmatically update the references.

Basically, I cycle through the references, keeping the ones which point to the old server (using Left$() along with the old server name). I then manipulate the FullPath of that reference and get it so it is pointing to the new server. I then delete the old reference and add the new one with the name I just manipulated.

I have this set up so I can work on a entire directory at a time. The only down side is that the VBProject password cannot be dealt with programmatically. Therefore, I will have to deal with that on a file-by-file basis.

Anyway, thanks to all who helped during the crisis and all who wrote past messages, which I cannabilized!

I just found out that we will have to run this repair procedure on 136,000 files!

Have you thought of using my generic Files processor?

No offense, but have you thought maybe the architecture of you system could use an overhaul. Hard coded references in 136k files? Wowser.

No I haven't. However, creating a procedure for those 136K files will be quite simple. I will start it, let it run, and if there are any files currently open (and thus unable to be updated), I will log the results. Then go back later.

The hard-coded references are the attached templates.

All those files are attached to one of our, oh, about 15-25 templates. Since all those references point to the old server, they need to be changed or it will crash Word.

I guess you're stuck then. I just hate to see programmers work so hard...

    Oh well.
