    Reading symbol characters (Access 2000/2002)

I have a database which is linked to .dbf files used by our student information system. Some schools have begun using special characters in student names such as the letter n with a tilde over it. When I read the name in Access it displays a symbol that does not resemble the letter n. Is there something I need to change so that Access can read these characters? I did a search and most questions pertained to how to type the special characters, not how to read them. Since I cannot change the data, I need to find a way to correctly read it.
