    Reboot Then Print Remaining Print Que (XP Pro & Access 2003)

    I have an app that reboots the computer three times per day. Occasionally the print que hasn't finished printing at the reboot time. How can I automatically restart the print que?

    Unless you haven't told us everything there is to this problem, it doesn't seem to be an Access issue to me, or am I mistaken?

    Are you printing to a standalone printer or to a network printer?

    Re: Reboot Then Print Remaining Print Que (XP Pro & Access 2003)

    My Access app runs unattended 24/7, reboots three times per day and generates 17 reports of varying length. Occasionally the reports have not finished when the computer restarts. After restart, the print que just sits there doing nothing. I was wondering if there is a call in Access VBA that would allow me to force the print que to resume.

    How are you restarting the computer? It sounds like you need to delay the restart until the printing finishes. I would think that rebooting a machine would clear the print que, since the connection with the printer would be terminated. I can understand restarting the Access app, we do that with some of our apps too, but why reboot the computer?

    My app captures real-time data from Programable Logic Controlllers (PLC) that control industrial robots, via an OPC server. Problem is there is a memory leak in the ActiveX control interface that chokes XP after about 18 hours of operation. The control vendor is working on a solution (sure thery are ...). My fix is to reboot at each shift change.

    1) XP retains the print que contents
    2) Reboot is accomplished via:
    Dim RetVal As Variant
    RetVal = Shell("C:WINDOWSSystem32shutdown.exe -r -t 5")

    Karl Peterson's PrnInfo (free) provides a set of classes to handle the print queue.
