    Boot From External HD

I just bought a USB external hard drive that I am using to backup all my docs as well as any setup files/software I might need during a clean install. Do I need to disconnect it before a clean install? When I put the Win XP CD in and start the install/format process, will it even see the external drive? I just want to make sure Windows won't try to format the external drive.

Also, does the firewall [I have one on a Belkin UPS as well as Zone Alarm] protect both drives?

And finally, would I want the external drive to be bootable?

    TIA

    Sherry,
There should be no need to disconnect the external drive but you could if it will give you peace of mind to do so.

When you use the XPCD to do a clean install it will only format the bootable drive ( C: ) not all drives.

The firewall (s) will protect anything that is back of the modem, both drives included.

If you have the XPCD there should be no need to try for a bootable drive or dual boot. You can always boot to the CD if necessary.
