Changing icons

I am running Win 98 SE on a Compaq laptop. The icons on the desktop and, in fact, around the whole system keep changing. For example, I turned on the machine last night to find that all html files had zip icons, my word files had gif icons and so on. Is this the first sign on a collapsing OS? Will I have to reinstall it? I ran ScanDisk without finding any errors. I also ran Compaq diagnostics which didn't give me any indication that there is a problem.

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Locate and delete
ShellIconCache

in your Windows directory. This should be rebuilt at you next reboot.

You can also clear this up without a reboot by installing TweakUI or X-Setup - both have options to rebuild the icon cache with a simple button click. X-setup also allows you to increase the amount of space that the icon cache can occupy (by default 1024).

Thanks for your help. I haven't had time to try them yet, but I'm sure that your suggestions will help a lot.
