    Renaming DC's

    Hi,

Does anyone know if it possible to rename a Windows 2000 domain controller (simple network with only one DC) ... it's not critical but I would rather not upgrade my domain to 2003 and still have my DC called <LOC'N>-<SERVER>-2000. It seemed like a good idea at the time ... doh!

According to <!mskb=296592>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 296592<!/mskb> you're going to have to add another DC to the domain to do this before you upgrade, but this article gives instructions for renaming after you upgrade.

Is this Active DIrectory or a flat domain? The only way I know is to create another DC, promote it and demote the original.

    Stuart/Mike

    Hi Stuart, Mike,

OK ... so I need another DC.

I can do that (I could do it better if I had my test system but I've loaned that to a friend) as I have one of those Small Form Factor Compaq desktop things configured with Windows 2000 server which I can promote to DC.

Do you know if I have to join the domain before I promote it or doesn't it matter?

Not sure what is meant by a flat domain ... it is a single server, single client domain at present but the DC has a lot of info on it because it was a workgroup server and now its domain. There's only one client because the rest of the network is workgroup at the moment but still can use the server's resources.

    Thanks for your help :-)

I don't know if you have to join the Windows 2000 domain before promoting to a DC in that domain, but it certainly can't do any harm. Why not upgrade to Windows 2003 first and then you can rename the DC following the link in my post above.
