USB HDD not recognised in Windows Explorer

Windows XP Home on a Medion PC computer notebook. CPU 2.0 GHz & 512 Mb RAM

Although the installation of a new 3.5 inch HDD in the USB external data storage case that I have fdisked & formatted, appears to be in order the drive does not appear in Windows Explorer. Also I have tried jumpering as Master & Slave to no effect.

In Device Manager there is an additional entry in Disk drives that reads:
ST340014 A USB Device. The ST340014 A is the Seagate hard drive model reference.

Also in Device Manager the entries read:
    Intel® 8280 1BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
    Intel® 8280 1BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
    USB Mass Storage Device
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub

All these devices are working properly & no errors are indicated.

What do I need to do to have access to this hard drive?

The most common cause of this symptom is that the drive letter it wants to use is in use by something else. This often happens if you have a mapped network drive.

Try right clicking My Computer and selecting Manage from the menu. Select Disk Management in the left hand window, right click your new drive in the right hand pane and choose "Change drive letter or path", then assign an unused drive letter to this disk.

Thank you Stuart. It's working a treat.
