Inconsistent delay when browsing folders (XP )

    Dear Loungers,

Normally Windows Explorer and other application will display folders and their contents quickly and on selecting a sub-folder the contents are also displayed immediately. In some cases - and I can't identify any pattern - the initail folder and contents are dispayed OK but on selecting another folder to display there is no response and if you persist it will display "(not responding)" although it is still working and eventually, and I mean minutes later, the contents will be displayed. Once the problem has occurred it remains for any subsequent requests to disply folder contents and by any application. If I reboot the problem generally disappears.
My machine is uses a 64 bit athlon chip and is high spec so it should not be a performance issue, and as it does not happen all the time it cannt be.
    Any ideas?

    many thanks...................... liz

    Try this:

Tools | Folder Options, View tab, uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers", Apply, OK.

I get similar symptoms on my laptop, if you ever find a solution for this please share it and it may fix mine too <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Stuart,

My experience with this is that it seems to happen when XP is looking for network resources that are not currently available. It seems to take forever to timeout.

    Stuart,

Here's two registry files in the one attached text file from Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP line 157. They may have a positive effect.

    Thanks,

I'll try exporting these keys and making the changes to see what happens. It'll take a while for me to give any feedback since my symptoms are very intermittent.
