    icons missing bar (xp)

Continuing the saga ... this morning, my icons, too, disappeared, and I can't get them back. Here's what I've tried so far:

Searched the lounge for "icons missing bar"

<!post= log off the account,209739> log off the account<!/post> "But, and this is really weird, I've discovered that if I log off the account and back on again, all the proper icons show up in the tray. However, if I reboot, I'm back where I started with a good number missing. Anyone see any connections?"

I've logged off as Chris Greaves, powered off/on, logged back in as Chris Greaves.

<!post= are you relocking ,201898> are you relocking <!/post> "After turning on the "QL" toobar are you relocking the task bar?"

    tried that

MSKB 321213 "right-click a blank area of the taskbar, and then click Lock the Taskbar. Or, change the size of the taskbar, and then restore it"

    tried that

suggests: Customize the Tray as a remedy.
    3) Follow Kelly's A>Z>under N>"Items missing in the notification area and her excellent suggestions should help including Line 53 Show Items in Notificaiton area and Line 156 Disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

    I read this every day.

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm ("N: Notification Area)
Log off and Log back on,

    Done that, see above.

Disable SSDP and uPNP Services (Line 156)

Found SSDP and disabled that; couldn't find uPNP.

Hide or Show Inactive Icons in the Notification Area (Line 53)
Remove Past Items From the Notification Area (Line 53)

    I've run the downloadble patches "enabledisabletray.vbs", "xp_pastitems.vbs" and "runmruclear.reg", powered off/on.

    TweakUI - repair Icons

    Tried this.

At this stage I still have the option of re-installing, but I'd rather not.

I am willing to try almost anything else, as it's aggravating me no end being unable to see what's already loaded.

The bottom-right corner of my screen shows me all the "memory resident" stuff such as modem, volume control, clock etc.
The bottom-left corner shows me the quick-launch icons.

I can't see the three Word documents, copy of Mozilla, Explorer etc in the centre of the status bar, as I used to.

I hope this all makes sense. So far the best part of today was going to sleep around 1am (grin!)

I can only imagine your frustration. Since you've already visited Kelly's site you may want to try the utility posted. Also, I'm sure you've tried these standard, non-hack type fixes such via taskbar properties:
<UL><LI>Make sure you've unchecked "group similar taskbar buttons"; and
    <LI>Hide inactive icons[/list]

I BET YOU CAN'T NOW IMAGINE MY DELIGHT!

    <font face="Snap ITC"><big>That worked fine</big></font face=snap> , except that I'm now misisng my QuickLaunch; however, a quick right-click and everything's span - and spick!

See? The day turned out alright after all, I'm a poet, again. Thanks Karen. Your'e worth a couple of DaveAs, a Beryl, and almost .087 of a Hans!

I'm glad you got all your buttons back <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>. I am curious though... am I correct to assume that it was Kelly's utility that did the trick?

<img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> Thanks for the compliment, but I have to say each of the individuals you mentioned have saved my skin more than once, each in their own areas of specialty.

TaskbarRepairToolPlus!.exe It was that saved the (end of) the day. And it has the cutest icon!

The lounge pointed me to Kelly a few weeks back. I put the URL on my top toolbar, and now use it whenever I find myself in one of those "uh-huh" telephone conversations.

    >I'm glad you got all your buttons back
Heck! If you can't push you own buttons, what's the fun in life, right?
