Is it a tempting phish?

Someone e-mailed me this link as a way to opt out of credit solicitations in the US:

http://www.OPTOUTPRESCREEN.com

... which is something I'd certainly want to do. But I'm kind of ignorant about IP addresses and all that stuff, and I noticed that the logo gifs at that site are kind of fuzzy, as if they are reproductions. I looked it up on Internic Whois and found:

Domain Name: OPTOUTPRESCREEN.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: INS1.WESTINTERACTIVE.COM
Name Server: INS2.WESTINTERACTIVE.COM
Status: ACTIVE
Updated Date: 29-nov-2004
Creation Date: 10-aug-2004
Expiration Date: 10-aug-2006

With a server like "GO DADDY", and "WESTINTERACTIVE", how do I tell if this site isn't a phish in itself? I would expect the domains, etc., to be run by an entity something more like http://www.myfico.com or http://www.annualcreditreport.com, both of which I know to be trustworthy.

The site does have a valid Verisign certificate, which is correct for the site address.

I do agree that the logo's don't look correct - and none of the logo's on the page links back to the other companies' sites, where you would expect them to also describe this service. I don't think I would trust this site unless it came recommended by a credible authority.

A google search for optoutprescreen shows many references from fairly credible organisations, but nothing that I would call definitive.

Here's one that you need to read, which I don't have the patience for, to see what the problem might be: FindLaw for Legal Professionals - Case Law, Federal and State Resources, Forms, and Code

In that case, the sustained action concerns gambling via 900-number, and it appears that West Interactive is a Nebraska based call center, probably the 900 number intake.

Thanks Al and Stuart (I hadn't thought to check the authenticity of the Security Certificate). I don't think I trust it.

I don't know.....
I was looking over the Equifax web site and I found this in their contact info:

How Can We Help You? Contact Information
Opt-out of mailing lists Call 1-888-567-8688

I called the number and you can do it over the phone or on their website "www.optoutprescreen.com

so I guess its ok to use.......

on a side note Equifax also has a new toolbar:
"The Equifax Toolbar is a FREE add-on to Internet Explorer that combines Pop-Up Blocker, a Google search, and Equifax's new ScamBlocker. The toolbar is developed and powered by EarthLink"
"ScamBlocker is a program that protects you from being tricked into giving your personal and/or account information to emails or web sites that are known to be fraudulent. These web sites and emails are known as "Phisher" sites. "

Re: Is it a tempting phish?

You say you called, but did you participate after calling? The reason I ask is that I noticed on their web site that in order to participate, the info you provide includes your Social Security Number and date of birth. I'm having a tough time understanding why one would have to give that kind of information to opt out of postal mail or email mailing lists. Seems to me that name and postal or email address should be enough. Makes me nervous...

Re: Is it a tempting phish?

Being Canadian it is kinda hard to participate in something that us for US residents. but you have to remember you are dealing with a lot of people. so I did go as far as hearing that they will need your name, address, and SS number. this is the only way to really know they are talking to the real person.... (I know that can be taken and used by somebody else, but how else can they know).....

Have you ever talked to a consumer report company.... one of the first questions you will get asked is for your SS number....(for Canadians it is a Social Insurance number.... same thing....)
if you are leary of using the web site.... goto the Equifax home page (I know 1st hand that Equifax is a credit report company because I am in a battle with them right now over some wrong information on my credit report). Then goto their contact us info and look up the optout number there.... give it a call..... and go from there...... sorry I can't help more then that.....

Hi John,

This Google search turned up several links (bottom of this page) to legitimate sites that refer to this as legitimate. One was the Wall Street Journal (I didn't read the article because I don't subscribe and didn't want to sign up online). I'd say it's OK to use.

Re: Is it a tempting phish?

Thanks, Doc. One of your links was to a Forum where a Poster recommended that people visit GODADDY and run a WHOIS on OPTOUTPRESCREEN. I did and turned up this:

Registrant:
Consumer Data Industry Association

1090 Vermont Avenue, N.W.
Suite 200
Washington, District of Columbia 20005
United States

Registered through: GoDaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com)
Domain Name: OPTOUTPRESCREEN.COM
Created on: 10-Aug-04
Expires on: 10-Aug-06
Last Updated on: 29-Nov-04

Administrative Contact:

Domain servers in listed order:
INS1.WESTINTERACTIVE.COM
INS2.WESTINTERACTIVE.COM

Consumer Data Industry Association seems to be valid, and while I'm still concerned about providing SSN and DOB, I may give it a whirl.

If my identity gets stolen, I'll try to let y'all know before my computer gets auctioned off in the bankruptcy sale!
