    Export email files (6.0)

Can anone help me to extract files from the Outlook Express database (dbx files) into a format that can be used in either Word or Excel?

I have generated a form using Front Page that is sending data back as emails. I did not antcipate the amount of response and now need to automate the data sorting.

    Thanks in advance!

If you have Word and Excel, do you also have Outlook? Interaction with Word and/or Excel would be much simpler - although it would still have to be done on a message by message basis. Alternatively, you could try loading Mozilla Thunderbird - which can import Outlook Express folders. All Thunderbird mail folders are in fact plain text files, which can be readily worked with in Word. HTH

    Thanks for your response!
Yes I have Outlook available, but not using it. The messages are already in the Outlook Express database. Are you saying that if that data was imported to Thunderbird, that they would be in text format that could be then used with Word?

I have Thunderbird on a different computer. What would I do, export the Outlook Express files to a floppy or CD and then import them to TB?

Alternatively, what would be involved to use Outlook?

Thunderbird mail folders will include both the entire header content and any HTML characters as part of their content. Word will probably ask you what kind of format you are importing - choose HTML or Plain Text as you see fit. If you have an old 12(?) point cable connection or some kind of more modern cable (or wireless?) connection that you can run between the two machines that may be simpler than burning a CD. (A floppy may be too small.) With a crossover cable or the like, you should be able to map a network path and import without copying.

Using Outlook would require some form of VBA code.

Alternatively, why not just install Thunderbird on the same machine, rather than messing about exporting to different computers....?

T-Bird & OE can happily co-exist without problems, and installing T-Bird doesn't affect continued use of OE as your mail client.
