How to get back my 2-Tiered Quicklaunch (XP Home)

On the bottom of my desktop, I have Start Button, then Quicklaunch, then Notification Area. The active programs straddle above this as my second and third toolbars up. (Usually in two rows--I keep lots of open windows.) Usually I have Quicklaunch in two rows. Somehow this lower part of my toolbar is now stretched across, and no border-dragging or toolbar property changing seems to enable this. After I re-arrange these properly, I know how to lock it as is.

I should clarify that I've usually been able to drag a vertical separator bar to cause my Quicklaunch icons to "double up" at the point I prefer. I don't remember seeing teensy little scroll arrows for either the active windows or the icons.

One must unlock the tool bar and then click and drag from the edge of the bar, when the double arrows are present.

Thanks....but...your answer repeats what I tried to describe, as having already tried, to no avail. The toolbar will jump into various configurations. The border-dragging causes a lot of flipping around that doesn't seem to make sense-exchanging toolbar sections erratically.

I want to return my layout to include: A vertical "spacer bar" to the right of the Quicklaunch shortcuts. The QL shortcuts will be in their own section, with its own border. This section will Not extend all the way to the notification area. When the QL section is on it's own, with a vertical bar to its right, I can expand JUST THAT SECTION by border-dragging, into two rows of 5 shortcuts. I do Not want 10 shorcuts one after another, all in one line.

>>and no ***border-dragging*** or toolbar property changing seems to enable this<<
>>. After I re-arrange these properly, ***I know how to lock it***<<

When the task bar is unlocked, there will be 2 dotted lines, one between the Start button and QL area, a second one between the QL and Task area
.
Drag the bar to a height of two more rows, the drag the dotted line on the right side of the QL until you get the two rows of icons in the QL.

The task bar MUST be defined as a height of 2 or more rows, or else the icons will just be hidden and then you will see a ">>"

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

OK that was specific and I tried it. Didn't work but I can describe things better in relation to your instructions.
* I don't have dots, I have bars. That is probably just my Windows Scheme . You obviously mean what I call vertical spacer bars. They are drag-able.
* There is no bar immediately to the right of the QL area. Only one far over, to the left of my Google taskbar input area.
* I found it doesn't matter how high my taskbar is--
and here is the exact problem--
* When I narrow the bar in over the QL icons, they ought to automatically stack. They don't. Instead, their section is reduced. And little double arrows appear (meaning, More icons, Hidden) .
What do you mean by "defining" the taskbar? You mean by making it 2 or more rows high? The only thing that changes when I expand my toolbar upwards, is, the Active Windows icons grow and will form 2 rows. (This is the behavior I want from the QL area.)
Thanks so far!

Try posting a screenshot. A picture really is worth 1000 words. Here's my quicklaunch bar and taskbar resized and reconfigured to what I suspect you are trying to achieve (or a resonable facsimile).

I just read this post in the XP forum that seems to provide written instructions to accomplish what you want to do. HTH

Thanks, that link came close, but didn't address what I have narrowed my need to: "Help! Quicklaunch Won't Stack Anymore!"

(Edited by Leif on 10-Feb-05 06:42. to replace attachment with reduced size version.)
Here's the screenshot. Note my refined issue: My Quiclaunch Won't Stack. Please keep in mind 1. No elements that you see have changed since my QL was stacked the way I am trying to configure it again. 2. When I drag any divider bar toward QL now, scroll arrows appear rather than the stacking. Also, if it means anything, my Desktop icon "should be" the first button. They have been rearranged with all the flipping and moving of the entire QL section.

What happens if you grab the "handle" between the smilie and the "G" on the taskbar (see screenshot) and drag it to the left toward the Start button ??

I was poking around in my files for something else and came across a tool from Kelly's Korner that might just be what you need. If my previous suggestion doesn't get it, try Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! and see if that can get you out of this.

What looks odd to me is that your QL items are on the bottom row, instead of starting on the top as I would expect.
What happens if you pull your taskbar back down to a single-height row and start again?
What happens if you remove the Google bar temporarily?

To change the order of the buttons, single-click and drag them to wherever.

Re: How to get back my 2-Tiered Quicklaunch (XP Ho

Could you have an "extra" toolbar running down there ?? Reason I ask is that I noticed you have 2 handles, each single height, on the left side next to the Start button in your screenshot and the screenshot of my taskbar only shows one handle on the left, double height. Could it be the difference between the XP and Classic views of the desktop, or can you right click on the taskbar and uncheck an "extra" toolbar or perhaps drag that upper handle on the left to the right and see if that eliminates the problem when the handles come together.
