    97 macros crashing 2003 (97 -> 2003)

I have several automated worksheets which were created in Excel 97 and work fine in 97 and in XP.

Whenever I try to execute the code in 2003 Excel crashes.

I tried to save the file in 2003 and it crashes.

The code that is executed shows a form as follows:

    [formname].show

Is there a problem between 97 and 2003? Some sort of sibling rivalry perhaps?

Just to repeat, I execute the macro in 2003 on Windows XP and it crashes. I copy the file to a floppy and transfer it to another machine running Excel XP on Windows 2000 Professional and it runs fine.

Is there a way to solve this?

    Thanks for your help!

It would help if you told us what error message you get when Excel crashes. Here are a few things to try:

    1. References and compiling.
    - Open one of the problem workbooks.
    - Press Alt+F11 to activate the Visual Basic Editor.
    - Select Tools | References...
    - If there are references starting with MISSING, note which ones they are, then clear their check boxes and click OK.
    - Select Debug | Compile VBAProject.
    - If you get an error message, correct the error. In case of a "User-defined type not defined" error, you will have to select Tools | References... again, and set a reference to the appropriate object library.
    - Repeat until you don't get error messages when trying to compile the VBAProject.
    - Try to save the workbook.

    2. Office Plug-in
If you have Norton Anti-Virus (NAV), make sure that the Office Plug-in is not enabled; it causes lots of problems. In the NAV main window, click Options, then Miscellaneous in the Other section.

Hans, I don't get an error message - just the familiar "Excel has encountered a problem" screen. Does this if I try to save it.
There are no missing references and Compiling had no effect.
I noticed a file called 'C330000' with no extension in my folder and, guessing that it was an Excel file it opened the file with a dialog saying "Repairs to C330000: Lost Visual Basic project" and all my code had been stripped from the file (see enclosed pic).
    Any other thoughts?

    Some further info -
I removed the forms from this workbook and the other macros seem to work. I tried to export the userforms but that crashed Excel.
Is there a Use form issue between 97 and 2003?

In principle, a userform created in Excel 97 should work in later versions without problems. I don't have Excel 2003 myself, so I can't offer anything specific. Perhaps someone with Excel 2003 will have more ideas.

I just created a new file, hit Alt-11, Insert-> UserForm and it crashed.
Must be an issue with my installation.
Is there a repair option that can fix this? I seem to recall some type of repair options in Office from XP onwards.

Try Help | Detect and Repair. You may be asked to insert the Office 2003 CD in your CD-ROM drive.

    Hans,
Thanks very much - I did that and there was indeed a problem - I enclose a pic in case others have the same problem.
When the installation was repaired, hey presto, I could install user forms in Excel and it didn't crash with the files I created in 97.
    Many thanks.
