cross references - insufficient memory (Word 2002)

    Hi,

A document I have with many cross references (hundreds) and pages (about 350 pages) is displaying the following message box when I add more than 8 or 9 different cross references:
'Word has insufficient memory, You will not be able to undo the action once it is completed. Do you want to continue?'

After clicking the Yes button, this message is redisplayed every time I add a cross reference.

There seems to be a memory limit that is being reached when adding cross references. The only way to clear the memory for cross references is to shut down Microsoft Word and then re-open the document. This is time consuming.

I was hoping someone could assist me with solving this problem.

    Thanks,

How much memory does your PC have?
Do you have many other applications open at the same time?
Which version of Wondows are you using?

Re: cross references - insufficient memory (Word 2002)

I had a somewhat similar problem with a Word 2000 Macro that used to insert large numbers of cross references into complex documents. I found that adding more than about 80 cross references to a document would cause Word to hang. The only workaround I ever found was to stop after adding about 60, explain the problem to the user, and get them to completely exit from word and resume my macro so that it could complete it's work!

I vaguely remember that I could reproduce this by creating a fairly simple document and manually adding cross references, after something between 80 and 100 it would always hang!

Re: cross references - insufficient memory (Word 2

Another thing that chews up copious amounts of Word memory is automatic spell/grammar checking - (the red and green squiggly lines under words).

Does it help if this turned off when using this document?

You might also try working in Normal view rather than Page Layout view to save some resources too.

    Hi,

Thanks for the information. Although Word has problems at around 9 cross references, I guess that could be due to the number of cross references already in the document.

    Hi,

    I have 1 GB RAM.
I only have Windows Explorer and Novell Groupwise running at the same time.
I am running Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4.

Thanks. Your PC has what it takes, so check out the suggestions by Stuart and Andrew.
