firefox does not recognize links (firefox(latest))

    Hi All,
I've been asked to help out a EE prof here on campus. Don't ask me why but SDSU's web pages are hosted by an outside source. Following is this prof's web page link. Using IE all his links work just fine. Firefox 1.0 does not even recognize them as links. I am told he used FrontPage to author his pages. (Oh and by the way, as well as hard to believe...he is blaming this on the campus network... <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15> ....)

    http://www.engineering.sdstate.edu/~galipead/

When I do web pages I still use VisualInterDev 6.0. I am *not close* to being a guru.
Can someone please point me to a remedy to his problem and a reason to why this is so?
Any questions and I will try to answer to the best of my ability.

Edit: I just downloaded and installed Netscape....it doesn't recognize the links either.

    Thank you.

Re: firefox does not recognize links (firefox(late

The reason the links don't work in Firefox is fairly simple. Viewing the source code of the page reveals:

    <code>EE 4/560 Microsensors</code>

Where there are spaces in the above code (specifically in the HREF section), replace them with % signs, which are interpreted differently in each browser engine.

My suggestion would be that he remove all spaces from file names and the corresponding URL code. Spaces cause ugly problems in hyperlinks and file names. Additionally, the code looks as though it were generated from some other Office application (not Frontpage) and pasted into Frontpage, as it has a lot of direct formatting and proprietary code that smacks of Microsoft's "Save as HTML" option in Office applications.

    Thanks Mark,
I knew it should be something fairly straightforward, but again I am nowhere near "guru status".
This should get us off the hotseat, for this matter anyway. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>

Actually, a space translates to % 20 (space added to prevent displaying as a space character - remove the space between % and 20).

Correct you are, Sir Johnston. I plead lack of caffeine and an early waking hour for my omission. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

It took me several tries to get the code to display properly in the Lounge. Each time I entered % 20, the Lounge displayed a space! <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    I finally gave up and entered % 25 (which displays %) followed by % 32 (for 2) and % 30 (for 0). Crazy world, this is! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Fellas, is it just me or what? I went to Gary's link and viewed the source code and it looks like he's put in a fix as y'all suggested, but my Mozilla will still not recognize the links as links. Do you guys see the links OK?

I guess the bottom line here (for all web designers, developers, and content authors) is to avoid using spaces in file names. I've been in the habit of using either underscores (_) or camel case (likeThis) when naming any file that will be referenced in HTML.

    Just my 2cents <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

    Hi Tony, Hi All,
Thanks for the link! I didn't know that such a service existed. Believe me I sent that link to the "offending" party. As a short example of what we are having to put up with....following is an excerpt of the reply I received from this gentleman:
<pre>"Unfortunately this looks like another example of a computer make our jobs harder.
Is there a utility in FrontPage that will fix this easily? It is not reasonable to me
that normal windows file names which allow spaces, will not work in a browser."
    </pre>

I guess there are no rules for proper microelectronic design then either. <img src=/S/sarcasm.gif border=0 alt=sarcasm width=15 height=15>
I was out of the office for most of yesterday, so I hadn't noticed the additional posts. Damn I love this place! <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>
Thank you all for your input. If I'm not careful I could actually learn more than I intended. <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19>

Firefox has a nifty extension, "ieview." If a page doesn't display properly in Firefox for whatever reason, right-click in the page and select "View this page in IE." That fires Internet Explorer and displays the page in it.

Not a solution to the spaces issue, just a quick workaround. Here's the link: http://ieview.mozdev.org/.

<hr>...normal windows file names which allow spaces, will not work in a browser... <hr>
I know this puts you between the proverbial "rock and a hard place" Gary but it seems to me that it's time your professor realizes that the internet is not the exclusive domain of Windows. Like it or not, I concluded a long time ago that web files should NOT have spaces in them, in spite of the fact that IE has been written to allow that use. For the best cross-browser results, it seems he would be well served to change his file naming conventions and modify the web pages accordingly.

Another tool for checking HTML code is the Html Validator, a Firefox extension based on the HTML Tidy Project.

With the Firefox extension, when viewing the page source it gives an option to try to produce a cleaned up version of the code.

You could supplement BigAl's feedback by pointing out that some of the more recent successful IE hijacking exploits have arisen due to web pages that have spaces in their URLs. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
