Font Shadows (XP Sp-2)

As usual, just enough knowledge to hurt myself...

Somehow my desktop icon font text has picked up shadows. How did I do it, and therefore how to turn it off?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

Now I've got question2:

The fonts have no shadoews, but the box that the type is in blocks out the graphic below... strange, 'cause I can remember back, way back, reading or hearing about making that box transparent.

Is this possible?

Hi Chuck

It is the same settings as the earlier post. You have a choice of 2 settings - icons are transparent with a shadow or they are not transparent and no shadow.

You might be able to find an add-in that will enable transparency for icon text, however, my opinion is that it's just one more thing running in the background that adds no substantial value. Perhaps if you give the drop shadows time, they will irritate you less...I find them a major improvement over previous versions of Windows.

It's not the shadow, it's the blinkin' box around the text... can we color this "transparent?

There is only 1 option to select giving the 2 possible outcomes.

With the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" not selected you get no shadow and icons are not transparent. When it is selected you get shadows and transparent icons.

Re: Font Shadows (XP Sp-2)

The answer to that is an unqualified "maybe." I once had a utility that would do this on Windows 98, but I have never been compelled to check and see if there was something similar that would control the appearance of icon text under Windows XP. What I meant in my previous post was to try the drop-shadowed version of the icon text for a short while and see if you get used to it.

Right-click on the desktop, choose "Arrange Icons by", go to "Lock Web Items on Desktop", un-check that.

Just fyi, if someone (me) has poor vision, they usually shy away from wallpapers for just this reason... I lose the type in thye designs, so I'm always looking for more controls... and the Accessibility issue doesn't really help... it just makes them bigger, or some high-contrast colors or such...

Ah me... I too had seen this in earlier versions, but, alas and alack...

I see. I would have thought that the drop shadows on an appropriate solid color would make the text more legible, but I am certainly no ophthalmologist!

I'm just hard to get along with... it is easier on a solid background... now I started playing around with wallpapers...
