Msconfig Startup query (Win XP Home SP2)

I was checking through my startup list, and spotted a "blank entry" (see below - 3rd from bottom of top picture). According to the info, it is in the HKLM entry shown in the bottom half of the picture.

All the other entries are there, but the "blank" one is confusing. Is it the (Default) one at the top? If so, what does it do? if not, wher is it?

I'm always suspicious of entries I don't understand.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

If you expand the "Location" column to the right it will show you where this entry is located in the registry. That may help you to identify what it is. The "Default" entry in the Registry, obviously can't be expanded in any direction.

What I tried to explain was that fully expanded, it showed that it is in the HKLM entry part of the reshown in the bottom half of the picture, as indeed were all the entries in the start-up list.

The second part of the image showed that section of the registry..

Silly me !! I'll look more carefully next time. I think what you are seeing is normal (I've seen this on my system) but I'll see if I can find something definitive to provide a more useful answer. Sorry for my confusion.

Re: Msconfig Startup query (Win XP Home SP2)

I found the following here HTH

If you have a blank entry in MSCONFIG it is likely to be as a result of one of two things:
A program install/uninstall has not completed properly and therefore not updated the registry "Run" keys. Looking at these registry keys may in some cases reveal an entry with a Name but no Data, others may have neither:
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServi ces
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServi cesOnce
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
Check these keys and see if there's an entry under Name and it may give a clue. As no program isn't being loaded in the Data column then the registry entry can safely be deleted. Author's second note: Back up the registry before making any changes. Also, in XP

Re: Msconfig Startup query (Win XP Home SP2)

Hi,
I have a blank line like that too. I am not sure but might be related to my printer drivers. Either that or I have some virus that EZ Antivirus included with the ZoneAlarm Security Suite wont find. Any ideas on how to narrow this down? If its a virus, obviously I would like to get rid of it. If its my drivers, well then, I can uninstall and reinstall and hope for the best. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks, hsel

Hi hsel, and welcome to the Lounge.

A little more information about your problem would be helpful here. Can you please post a screenshot of the blank line or try to provide the content of the line in question. Also, what printer are we talking about and how new or old is it (cronologically and in regard to being part of the system) ?? Is this the only reason you suspect a virus ??

Re: Msconfig Startup query (Win XP Home SP2)

Hi, Thanks for welcoming me to the lounge and here is some additional info. My Printer is an Epson C80. I am including a screenshot per your request. I've run MS Antispyware Beta, SpySweeper 3.5, ZoneAlarm Antivirus, and even the only Symantec Antivirus scan. I appear to be clean, however the blank line is there. I wonder what it is... Anyway, perhaps there was a bad install/uninstall. It could be related to using the autoupdate feature on soundblaster.com for the audigy 2. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

hsel

Re: Msconfig Startup query (Win XP Home SP2)

I think that this is an example of the same quirk that my previous post 449689 in this thread referred to. From what you say about your system coverage for viruses and spyware, you should be clean and this is just a "phantom" entry that you can safely delete. If you're not comfortable with that, then simply leave it alone as it doesn't appear to be doing any harm. HTH

The interesting thing, is that when I go to that registry entry, I can't find a null entry. I appreciate the quick response and thanks!

I'm not certain, but I would suspect that fact confirms that the entry in msconfig is a "ghost" entry with no substance in the registry and therefore can be safely deleted.
