    Spreadsheet

Does anyone know of a STANDALONE spreadsheet program, ( preferably shareware or freeware ) that will accept MS Works .xlr file type imports?

My frustration with MS Works 7.0 is starting to get to me.
I only want a spreadsheet without having to install a mass of other things that come in a "suite" of other office tools.

    Re: Spreadsheet

Leaving aside the shareware/freeware issue, Excel and other spreadsheets are available as individual applications. They install the basic bits of the "suite" they belong to in order to function, but that's all.

    Re: Spreadsheet

I have not seen or heard of any program that will read the MS Works files. You might need to export them to a delimited text file and then import if Works will export for you.

What I have done, was to print out the spread sheets and then OCR them into Excel.

Do a google search on "Free spreadsheet software" and you will find all kinds, but remember that if you want to share these spreadsheets others will need the same software.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Edited by Bigaldoc to add URL code.[/i] See the Quick Guide or 1-Click TagPanel.

Try Google, "free spreadsheet", install first and see whether .xlr come over (probably all take .csv), if not, uninstall and get the next...

    Re: Spreadsheet

    Hi Bob

My experience is that anything produced by MS Works is a (deliberately?) closed and obscure format. I doubt there's a standalone SS program capable of reading it; however the article Works: How to Recover Data from a Corrupted Works Spreadsheet does indicate that the Microsoft Excel 2000 Viewer 97 will allow viewing of the results (not formulae) and might be the closest you'll get to standalone.

But if you do have Office installed (XL or Word) that might be the best bet.

    Re: Spreadsheet

    Cahrlotte,
Yes, but I want to avoid the price of a "suite" just to get a spreadsheet.
Besides, I don't think Excel imports xlr files from Works. Another thing I want to avoid is the reformating of a new set of sheets, plugging in formula etc. I spent a lot of time getting Works sheets to do exactly what I want, so I may have to just live with Works for now?

    Dave,
I think you are saying what I really didn't want to hear. See my post to Charlotte above.

I have googled around and so far have not seen anything worthwile. I was hoping that some Lounger might come up with something. We have a LOT of users out there with a lot of experience. I'll have to keep looking and keep hoping.

    Adam,
Thanks for the links but the first one I had already tried and the other didn't seem to have an answer either.

    Re: Spreadsheet

    Hi Alan,
    Thanks for the comeback.
See my reply to Dave. It looks like I'm stuck with Works unless someone can save the day.
My goal was to go to a new SS that had more flexibility and just import my Works files over to the new without reformatting the cells etc. So far it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
I'll keep looking and hoping though.

    Re: Spreadsheet

I haven't tried it myself, but what about the OpenOffice.org software?

Runs on different platforms, opensource software, and compatible with many popular formats. I can't however, speak to the xlr format.

    Re: Spreadsheet

    Chris,
I was wracking my brain to think of the name of that set of programs. I thought that Sun Micro bought them out a while back and took it off the market?
I am DL a copy of it now and will see if it handles xlr files. Will post back. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Bob,

I case you have any budget check out the MS Student & Teachers edition of Office. You can find it at retail for $129 USD or less. Note: Before purchasing can you check out whether Excel will open the spreadsheet on a different PC?

    Re: Spreadsheet

    Chris,
I THINK Open Office will do the trick.
I DL a copy and installed just the spreadsheet. Opened an xlr file of mine and VIOLA! It did open and save OK in either xlr or it's own format. Both seem to do fine without any obvious changes or loss of features. I'll have to give it a more extensive workout, but so far so GOOD.

BTW, it IS the old Star Office program that Sun bought out, with references to Star in a few places. Fine with me. ( Works for me.....pun intended )

    Re: Spreadsheet

I think Star Office and Open Office are two "forks" of the same open source project. Star Office costs something, but it comes with some extrase (like a database program).

    Re: Spreadsheet

    That could be, Jim.
I only installed the SS prog. (that mentions Star) but Open Office also has Writer, Impress, a multimedia presentation, Draw and DB user tools.
    Looks good though, so far.
